Hi Alex, welcome to the UT forum.
Do you still believe this mechanism for comet formation? The UV spectrum from Deep Impact shows that a large fraction of the ejecta from this event was water (actually Hydroxyl ions).
I have heard some say that this is because Metal Oxides in the stony materials were heated up by the collision, and the Oxygen combined with the cloud of Hydrogen around the comet, but such claims do not explain why there is no detection of the Metal atoms that the Oxygen had been bound to.
I am curious also (using your model) as to how so many comets could have formed. Normally planet's rings are inside the Roche limit, and so the comets should have been disrupted if they passed there (as was Shoemaker-Levy 9), but also, it is a small place for so many comets to have to thread the needle (so to speak).
