A vertically oriented wire in Earth orbit will generate electricity. It will also take energy from other sources. This is not a perpetual motion machine, but it would work for a very long time. This is one of the power mechanisms for the space elevator. BTW, this is NOT an Alternative Theory. I'm moving this thread to Everything Else in the Universe.
