I was just wondering why most sunspots are located on or near the equator and what causes the sunspot cycle.

During Solar Minimum and Solar Maximum...Sunspot form primarily at mid latitudes on the sun (like 30 - 45 degree), the sunspot tend form at lower latitudes as the cycle progresses, appearing very close to the solar equator as the next solar minimum approaches.
