Thread: USS CHANTICLEER ASR-7 [ HUb' ]

1. Why did they get rid of the ropes, Hub'? Were they damaged? How many sailors were needed to lift a reel of 9" rope?

I looked up the Chanticleer out of curiosity, and one website has a list of people who served on her, several were on before 1970. I hesitate to put the link in here, because the website is full of nasty popup advertising.

2. and now this 9:37:37.?

2nd attempt 9:28-37AM psT {sorry about the delay hit the wrong spot
THE Line was Manilla { it would have soaked up the fall out {{ WE soon would be in
a very very wise move / on the part of the deck officer / in my opinion
{ if ? by they?/? you mean the deck crew who put the LiNE over
{{ its my {gamma} guess Yes { if you mean the 9 {{ not more than normal use
{{{ the reel itself was not removed / just the LiNe / After the fallout was over
I spent some time near the port reel / it seamed very very WARm to me / Understand?

Lemme at this time i'LL try to make mum sence out of 400 mSv
= =
OK my sharp organizer says i was told miliREM/hr so i'LL
try to ask the WEB how to cover 400mSv to mR/H and let U know
: : :
millirem can be converted in a straightforward way to the
SI unit, 1 millirem = 0.00001 Sv = 0.01 mSv = 10 μSv
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B6...equivalent_man
? ? ? ?
http://www.equitainer.com/Resources/...itted-Dose.pdf
typical background dose rates are 40 - 400 millirem
400 millisievert per hour at Fuk-us-hi-ma 40000mR = 11.11 events per SECOND
at the Daiichi plant 1,190 millirem per hour 11.9mS
/TilT\
were 100 megaton eXplosions each month. Increasing in frequendy , Bill
was "ORDERED" to set Yolk. I was there to listen in & I was there also
when the nine inch was put over the side. donno if BiLL was on deck ?/?
~bt~
after the 9 inch went over there WERE no more 100's. those events ended
during the time the port hatch was open {9 inch going in) I got a reading
beyound the limit of the equipment to register eXcept for the 1st MiLLiS
as i recall the AN/UPN-1A had 3 ranges 0-100 1000 & 10K it peged on 10K
.BB.
& that is with gamma shield in place. it was quite a long time RELATIVELY
before 7 entered into the fallout. the Fall out WAS IONized. it behaved
very strangly: as a mist particle approached the porthole glass it would
pause (like a space craft about to land on the MOON) Suddenly Splat No bead
it simply had no serface tension to hold it together and spread out Quickly

6? the WHOLE deck crew? was HOW ManY. i did not go out on deck to count them at that moment
i'LL say this THEY WERE:.
I DID HEAR FROM
BiLL above
in this
---------3/15
nine inch Line is very heavy, especially when wet {more than six is my guess {{ ALL of them is correct
you might ask BiLL if you see him, He may have been in on the move (outside (PORT) prior to fall out

6. Yes, that's funny - I read tsunamis have a velocity of about 700 km/h (390 mph). That would make for considerably less than half an hour warning time.

You are correct, the tsunami wave travelling speed in deep waters is in the order of 700 km/h, with a low amplitude. This is why any ships off the immediate coast may register the wave, but are really not affected by it. As the water gets shallow, the speed decreases to 100-150 km/h and the wave amplitude is several meters. The destruction effect comes from a large initial wave hitting the beach, and subsequent large waves pushing the water deeper inland (kind of not letting the water escape), so you get quick flooding of large inland areas.

8. The only math I had to do for my college oceanography class was to calculate tsunami travel time. I remember none of it, though I'm sure my notes are around here somewhere.

Very interesting, I'd like to see your notes, if they included the transition from deep to shallow waters. Tsunamis are quite counter-intuitive, as the waves go fast in deep(ish) water, and only show their real height when the water level gets low. Generally speaking, for the tsunamis that don't have this kind destructive power, the first thing you see is the sea receding, and people gathering to the shore to see what's going on. Then, the tsunami wave strikes at 5-10 m height, and pretty much washes away everything on the the seashore, and a some distance past it. Then, the nest waves strike, and push the water further inland, not letting the first waves to escape, so you have a lot flooding in a few minutes.

10. They now estimate the height of the surge at the Fukushima plant to have been 14 meters. Wow.

This was a 101 class, so I doubt it included that transition. More like the classic "if a train leaves Chicago at 4:00" problem, only with "if an earthquake causes a tsunami in Chile at 4:00, how long does it take the waves to reach New Zealand?"

15. 20110404 the Tsunami question that comes to my mind is for boat owners { along the oregin coast
its weLL known a tsunami is on its way {poise for eXample a person aboard a boat hears the warning
DOES it or does it not make sence to head out to sea and let the incomming wave pass beneith the
vessel. as the wave approaches the land how far off shore does the wave height exceed the ability
of the boat to get over it and on out to deeper water? I truley have no idea. the video's ive seen
suggest the surge velocity to be not that great. However perhaps its an optical dilusion. I REMember
on time at a Mountian watching a rock fall. in the telescope it appeared as if in slow motion? SLOW
uP CLOSE IT MUST HAVE BEEN VERY FAST MOVING IN DEED? anyway does a boat?
surf boarder have a chance heading seaward rather than trying to flee to higher ground Hu?

1:45 Yeah?yeah I would like to hear his Note also 3 min REMaing
the tail about wave Height REMinds me of the typhoon an Shanty Sliding Backwards in the water
kind of scarry made a very loud noise as the desiles became compressors
I do not recall the length (300) or Heighth T

at the time in Question i was in CIC | &had a feeling
something was seriously wrong |thUS i went forward
: : :
being very aprehensive, i paused a long time prior to even
Looking into the Wheel house. then i peered around the door
A numbness crept up from the deck as i began to be aware
? ? ? ?
that everyone in the wheelhouse was transfigured.
By transfigured i mean a seen from star treck when in the
transporter A crew is about to beam down to the planet
there is an instant just prior to disassembly {transfigered
/tilt\
i noticed that they were alll looking out the port hole & into
the distance. THus i decided to avoid being transfigured myself
i needed to avoid looking out and concintrate on looking in.
into the wheel house i went. the wheelhous crew REMained transfgured
~bt~
by thinking each step { next put a foot on that spot then there.
i walked forward right next to the forward buldhead. the rest of
the crew were spread evenly away from the sides in a ridiged
formation that was very eary. My attention focused on the inside
.BB.
surface of the port hole it was there clearly. in a few moments
i lt me visual focus shif to the ouside surface of the thick glass
i could see the fine mist which when viewed by the crew in the
gray distance held them in such a transfigured array. ... ...

my focus was on the singular specks of fog as they approached the
outsde edge of the thick glass. the would approach the pain at a
constant velocity (probably 11 knots) and when about 2mm away would
stop. and REMain motionless there 2 mms away. then suddenly &
very violently the last mms were closed and the tiny bit of moisture
would splatter itself in a broad film acoss the serface as if there
were no serface tension, nothing to hold it together as a spec of fog

flying bridge and gaze forward at the & watch as the bow would pound down into an

a fragment of spray would reach the flying bridge making it necessary to duck
