We should have an actual chat room on Mirc for Universe today. There we can have more 'live' conversations lol
Just an idea. And the current Moderators could be OP's or admins...or i could coz i brought up the idea? :P lol j/k

The idea of a chat has been brought up.

A dedicated chat is probably not going to happen any time soon but another idea of having a chat once a month or so with an invited speaker/chatter/guest is on the cards. What do you guys think about that? The more good feedback the more likely it is to happen.

That is an excellent idea Josh. If Fraser could line up a guest every once in a while and let us throw some questions at 'em! I could go for that.

I have been harassing just adout everyone to get a chat room, I have suggested a partnership with spacedaily, Spaceguy (carl) is all for it. The advantage as I see it is Spacedaily in Australia and UT in Canada should be able to provide almost 24 hours of moderation. For the time being, till anyone makes a move on this, I recomend cygo, It has a chat space, unutilised at the moment. And if anyone else has any recommended chat sites, Link them here B)

Yeah, I like the interactive chat with space experts idea, but other than that, I'm not really ready to explore it. We're one month away from the new baby... you'll all be lucky if I even get the newsletter out. :-)

Just think Fraser, in few years you'll have plenty of time...waiting up late at night waiting for your teenagers to get in. You'll have something to do while hoping they aren't in an accident because they were too busy to remember to call and let you know they were going to be late.

Ahh yes, what fun it is to raise teenagers.
Almost as much fun as having one as a young adult who is a substitute school teacher, that vanishes all day but forgot to tell us she has been called to sub.

But on the subject, I wonder if we really have enough particapation to justify a chat room. Zephor suggested a joint endeaver with Space Daily, which is a good idea, But I can't honestly say I can commit to help moderate a chat room. The time I spend on line is so limited now, I never get to post as much as I'd like, or even read all the forums I find interesting. Then I never know when the wife will call me away from the computer.
It would be nice to have, but I feel I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't contribute to something I really am streatched too thin to get involved with.

    Mirc is a great place!
I think it's best having a chat amongst ourselves here...
Yeah having a guest speaker once a month sounds fantastic!

Planetwatcher, that's one of the reasons a full time chat isn't viable. But, if a once a month or once every while a special guest is brought in to chat then it would be advertised in the newsletter and, I'm sure, a lot of people would come in for it. If there is question time then the Forum people should get first dibs and I for one would love to be online to speak to experts in any number of fields as I'm sure a lot if not all us moderators would. Zubrin doesn't seem like a busy guy ... for that matter neither do the astronaut corps...let's get them on. :P

Josh, I would be hard pressed to disagree with you on that.
I must have missed something earlier in the thread, because I have no idea who Zubrin is.

Robert Zubrin is the president of the Mars Society. He wrote a pretty amazing book called the Case for Mars. If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend it.

Planetwatcher, also see here. This UT thread has a link to a short piece by Zubrin and his type of forward thinking.

A dedicated chat room for Universe Today would be better.

    Yes it is zephyr.

Would you say it was better than cygo ? I think if we find chats that are relevant to different topics we should link to them from the relevent threads, providing the chat room admins don't mind. I would love to register and try Mirc but I have no computer of my own nor the money to spend registering. Maybe in a year or so. I have been looking at ezboard, where you can register for free, ecept to put up the chatroom itself, as far as I can tell.

I haven't heard of cygo. I just know that most people use Mirc. ANd you don't have to pay for it, as far as i know.

Click Here to go to Cygo.com

Registration is free, in activities there is CHAT click on it, if you have registered your there. The site is mainly about Mining Asteroids, but there is a largly unused chat space there. that why I think we should find ongoing chat rooms on subject specific themes.
like This story from spacedaily. A great place to talk about it?

    I agree with Planetwatcher...

If we wanted a moderated chat room then we'd have to set up a schedule amongst us moderators so that someone is always there and for that reason, it's not viable.

We could always have an un-moderated chat room (as many sites do) with a disclaimer attached.

Also, if we had a chat room, I'd want it to be UT only... not out of snobbery, but rather practicality because if you have strangers wandering in and out of the chat room, that's a potentially volatile situation since people could just go in, say something inflammatory then leave.

If you keep it UT only, then we can control it better and the chances of people having bad experiences are minimised.

    Cygo seems alright.
I live in Australia and i think some other guys here do too, well we (at least i do) come on when most of you guys are asleep or i don't know where, so the chat can always be moderated, as far as i know.

That quite a good way of getting more members for the forum too. If the newsletter announced a chat with a top notch space celeb or similar and you had to be a member of the forums to join then the numbers would increase dramatically. With any sort of luck they'll stick around!

  24. #24
    That's a really good idea. :-)

I'm using the discussion board from Invision. If you check their board out, they've got a chat option. I wonder how they're doing it.

Nice to chat to you Draco, Kashi and Josh, maybe see you at Cygo some time?

If you check out the Invision Chat Room (these forums are powered by Invision as well) here then you will notice that you have to get a forum account before you could use the chat room. Its only a demo but it shows what can be done.

    [SIZE=1][COLOR=blue] HI THIS IS SATARNIC
WELL FRIENDS THE IDEA ABOUT [COLOR=blue]HAVING A CHAT ROOM WHERE WE CAN EXPLOIT THE IDEAS OF EVERY PEOPLE. WELL FRIENDS ONCE IT IS STARTED PEOPLE WILL DISCUSS FIRST ABOUT UNIVERSE AND THEN WHEN AND AS TIME GOES ON AND ON IT WILL BECOME AS OTHER CHAT ROOMS AND THERE WONT BE ANY USE OF THE CHAT ROOM FOR THE UNIVERSE FINDERS . SO ACCORDING TO ME THERE WILL BE ACTUALLY NO USE OF THIS ROOM
I HAVE AN IDEA AND I WANT TO SAY THAT IF THERE IS A PROFFESOR OR SOMEONE LIKE THAT IN THE ONLINE QUESTIONS ROOM WHERE OUR SIMPLE BUT NOT EASY TO UNDERSTAND CAN ALWAYS HELP US TO SOLVE ANY OF OUR QUESRY THAT WE HAVE

  29. #29
I disagree, I think it would get used quiet a bit, especially since those who use the room regularly will get to know one another. I've seen this happen before on other sites.

Perhaps we could start by setting up shop in Invision, then U.T. isn't libel but it will be amongst us from U.T.
