I think the theory of parallel universes was started to solve the time travel paradoxes. But the theory poses a lot of confusion.

If there are infinite universes, we would invariably end up in one of them. There is no need for a theory of everything. That destroys the cause for which we invented science. There is no need to know WHY, which we all want to know.]

What do you think?

I don't think we will live to know why, so there's not much point worrying about whether we should or not in my opinion. Personally I like the idea that a theory of everything doesn't exist.

But you could still create a TOE for your universe.

Must read Phillip Pullman's trilogy! Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spy Glass! Omg! *thumbs up*
It has parallel Universes! With the Subtle Knife cutting through them!
It has the church and science, and this one man tries to destroy the Authority(God) All 3 are fantastic!

Why is there no need for a theory of everything?

Because our universe with it's laws and peculiarities will always exist in an infinite number of universes, without any reason for WHY it has those particular laws and peculiarities.

You would still need a Theory of Everything, but it could be a Theory of Everything for the mother universe. You would need to understand the universe you live in.

That is, if it is indeed true that there are other universa outside ours. And if there were, would we see them?

common sense rules there has to be something out there - be it parallel univ or something! if the big bang is true, what did happen to ignite it? what went on before? does our univ stretch on infinitely? if there are parallel universes, are they infinite? are they really parallel or do they cross and collide and mix up? someone could therorize just about anything! i kinda like the idea we really don't know, but someone is bright enuf out there to logically theorize all these possibilities!

draco you forgot "Golden Compass" and yes I agree all those books are awesome . If we were finally to have a TOE , it wouldn't mean that science would come to an end(if that is what some of you are affriad of).

Science cannot end, but discoving a TOE would speed up scientific discoveries. But I think eventually scientific discoveries would slow, but currently in our world they are still speeding up.

I don't know if science will slow down because about 50 years ago it was said that theoretical science would be coming to an end shortly. The mind always wants to know more, that is why I don't think science will ever slow down, we can never simply know it all, where would all the fun in that be? But the cool thing about discovering a TOE is that once its proved right it would soon be taught in colleges or maybe even higher level science classes in high school.
