Thread: Old tv satellite dish

  1. #1
    Hi all!
I have an old tv satellite dish (6 foot diameter) and would like to find a astronomy use for it.

Can anyone help and think of a good simple way to use it?

I was not sure where to post this question.

    Thanks

    hey Astrono,

If I had that dish I would build me a radio telescope. I have found web sites for directions on how to build them. Just look under radio telescopes. there are a few of them..

Hello, I got a satellite dish my buddy had. I used it for a roll back roof for my telescope building. I painted it with Snow Roof" material . Almost looks a real obervatory.

Now that is a novel idea!

    A roll off roof!

The dish I have is only about 5 or 6 across so might not be large enough for a roof, but thanks!

There was a drive some years ago by one of the SETI organizations to convert them into radio telescopes. You might research that possibility. Mickey Schmidt

Well, in ottawa it's only 11p.m. and it's the Aug. 19/03. If knowone can help you with the astromomy dish you could always use it as a planter put holes in the bottom, some stones, and wala puy your plants in it. good luck. I'm not trying to be funny but it's hard to reuse those dishes like broken printers. Good Luck two-paw

I would do what star gazer would do. I would make good use of it by making a radio telescope. But first I would make it unique. I would make it look futuristic like it was from a sci-fi movie.

You realize that this thread is from five years ago, right? The OP is no longer an active member here.

Because it's a commercial number for a company specializing in parabolic reflectors/collectors.

    In other words...spam.
