    Talking BAUT at last

    Hello all,

    [Edit 19 Oct 2005]:

The name the Bad Astronomy/Universe Today BOINC distributed computing teams has now officially changed to BAUT.

And there is a new thread to discuss the team and its projects, here. Please post there from now on.

Thanks to team founder azazul for making it happen.

Done for orbiter. Now I needs me some orbits. Hmm, probably work better if I attached a project. The poor thing was screaming for something to do.

Hi, I just joined the BABB orbits team, the number of team members has not increased (currently at 5) is there a delay before it increases?

<Edit to add> It seems to be ok now (about 1 hour later) now showing 8 members

I'm there too. One of my two boxes (unfortunately the one that gets the most Einstein work done) has had to have the hours it works cut back rather, though - I'm running some new 'proper' programs that need all the resources they can get.

We could even have a poll there for team founder, if you prefer. 8) Or even team name.
How about a gateway page, hosted by Mickal, where the visitor is given a choice of entering the BABB forum or the BABB Boinc home page. The page could include a short description of each site. I think the BABB Boinc home page, or even the gateway page, should also include a link to the Scotson's Boinc forum.

    Welcome all!

    orbit@home:

Welcome all! We are 9 at the moment:

    Ken Vogt
    Lance and Cyndi
    Wolverine
    jt-3d
    zebo-the-fat
    Minbari`
    gopher65
    Klausnh
    mid

    All well-remembered from E@H.

Membership is still open--now above 875.

Latest I glean from their webpage is crunching will start in late July...but it's alpha, so we must have patience.

I posted earlier that if you want to wait for a bit when they first start up to avoid being bitten by major bugs, you should detach from the project. With the later BOINC clients this shouldn't be necessary, I think: you should be able to highlight the project and select "no new work." Then, I'm guessing, when the app is ready, the app will be downloaded but no crunching will happen without WUs.

    *************
When I requested the BAs permission for this team, I slyly hinted that having a team would enable us to insinuate a few links for his sites onto the various projects' websites. As I read his reply, he slyly hinted that this would be a Very Good Thing.

So I think we should pepper their boards with news of the BABB team's existence, the Bad Astronomy main page, the BABB forum and the BA Blog.

In this regard, Archer17 made a fine post at Cafe Einstein, which is still on the front page there.=D>

Each Cafe also now has a Team recruiting thread. That one, in the orbit@home Cafe, is particularly busy, dominated by BoincSynergy, and featuring lots of html and cool, hip talk.

I'd be really grateful if someone here could post a good looking blurb to this thread, with live links to the BA's sites. Wolverine, in a post over there, has a nice background for the mundayweb stats boxes, but you could also use fancy ones from boincstats, or wherever, that use html. Could also be copied to the Cafe Einstein thread of the same name.

It's very flattering, but I would ask, IMHO, that you not use my name: let's concentrate on promoting the team and giving something back to the BA. TIA, fer shure.=D>

Interested users can help us now by testing our "Beta Apps". Instructions for installing them can be found on this page. The current Beta Apps feature a fix for the ATI graphics driver issue (Windows) and working screensaver and fast AltiVec science code (MacOS).
Since installing this trashes the running WU, in an abundance of caution I'm waiting til all my WUs have finished to try this. Will let you know in a day or so.

Cafe post will take longer, understood; no real rush, since people can change teams as often as they wish before the project starts.

Sent a bulk email to everyone, since it was easiest. I'm guessing previous members already knew about it? ops:

And hopefully mundayweb will support orbit@home as soon as we start; they do have other alpha projects.

O@h is now at 918, amazingly, still possible to join!

    Our list is now:

    Ken Vogt
    Jyril
    Lance and Cyndi
    Wolverine
    jt-3d
    sohvan
    zebo-the-fat
    azazul
    Minbari`

    DigitalKnight
    Daniel H.

I just noticed Tom Mosher is not on the list.

Verizon must be blocking the confirmation email again.

Tom, if you are within the sound of my words, see if you can unblock at your end.

I will post right away to the o@h board pointing to the fix that E@H did.

    here

I've emailed and PMed him as well.

    --------------------
Update: Apparently from the reply to my post, the problem is with Verizon this time. Or possibly Tom has not activated, being busy and all.

So I overreacted again. But I tried; hope it works out.
    --------------------
Update Part II: All is well, Tom is registered as Thomas Mosher, not tmosher, and has just joined the team. =D> A small comedy of errors; all mine. ops:

    ****************
Thomas Mosher was #978, so they are very close.

Incidentally, everyone's user name (for each project) is totally editable under Your Account if you should wish to make it/them the same as your board name. Just as you wish of course.

    My apologies.

Minbari, I have no problem going to the web page. It loads as it always has. Using IE6 and windows ME

Strange, I tried 5 teams before and after team BABB and all are ok. hmmm

Thanks, perhaps there is an issue with firefox or something, though I doubt it as the error message is saying the teamID field isnt recognized.

    Digging deeper.

Time to come out of the closet. TANSTAAFL is me. Short version: When I first signed up I didn't know how to add work computer to my account so I created another account. It was an old 266Mhz P2 which, at that time, I didn't think was fast enough

Perhaps a tip for others whom get caught in this little curly trap.

Press and hold down the shift key whilst clicking refresh and your cache will clear for that page.

The above fixed my problem, sorry for pressing the alarm button.

    Thanks above for your help!

    Glad this is working.

you might also try this version to sort it by total; just recently realized the other one wasn't randomly sorted, but by RAC.ops:

    Code:
    http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/team_display.php?teamid=1064&sort_by=total_credit&offset=0
And this will sort BABB/o@h by total credit, one day soon.

I did install the beta version of the new einstein crunching app today; it's working just fine, and for most people on the E@H board, it did solve the ATI screensaver issue. For me, the "show graphics" window still works, but the SS still doesn't. Probably my el-cheapo video card. WUs are taking longer, though this may just be an temporary thing. But it's not a recommended upgrade.
