Bad Science on the History Channel

Yesterday there was a show called "Broken Wings" about avaition archaeology on the History Channel. There was a section about the search for a P-51 Mustang that might have crashed into Santa Monica Bay during World War II. They showed one of the searchers walking along the shore using a sophisticated instrument to try to locate the wreckage.
    Dowsing rods. Really.
They didn't find the airplane. It might not have been where they were looking, but still... I had a tough time watching after that.

A few weeks ago on the UK version of the History Channel there was a prog about the Tirpitz, it had a section featuring an 'Iowa' class Battleship blasting away and the commentator claiming that the Iowas had proved themselves in combat with the 'Mighty' German battleship.
As the Tirpitz never met an 'Iowa' It was mind boggling!

Well the rods were just one part of the gear. I don't know what the rods were doing in there either. But that wasn't what the show was about so I didn't let it bother me. Besides the rest of the gear was conventional. Over all it was a good show.

And it wasn't that they didn't find the plane, it was that the possible location is now under 10 feet of sand and they had to get permits to dig in the sand so we don't know if they did or didn't find it. Not resolving that crash was what I didn't like about the show.

The whole Discovery Network stinks to high heaven these days. They pedal as much pseudoscience as real science, if not more...

Discovery Home and Leisure in the UK is good, they have Matt Hayes and John Wilson doing good fishing shows in the UK and that weird Australian guy.
