    I must be missing something

Don't you think the Oxygen situation on ISS has gone on long enough? Something as important as breathing should come first, right? Why didn't they replace that defective unit way back when it started messing up?

    CRAZY

ISS to shift to backup oxygen supply
Posted: Fri, May 20, 2005, 5:13 AM ET (0913 GMT)

The failure of an oxygen generator on the International Space Station will force the crew to switch to a backup oxygen generator system next week, NASA officials said Thursday. A balky Elektron unit, which generates oxygen from the electrolysis of waste water, failed permanently earlier this month after months of intermittent problems. The crew has been using oxygen from a Progress spacecraft docked to the station, but that source of oxygen will be exhausted by Monday. The crew will then turn to another backup system, "candles" that generate oxygen through an exothermic chemical reaction. Such candles were used on the Mir space station; one caused a fire on the station in 1997 that briefly threatened the crew. There are enough candles on the station to support the crew until a new Progress spacecraft is launched next month, carrying additional oxygen supplies. The crew can also draw upon oxygen stored in the Quest airlock module if needed.

Probably as simple as not caring. There's not much support (financially and hardware wise).

Without the shuttle, the ISS is now way behind schedule. Not to mention Russia hasn't been doing to well supporting the station either. Nor anyone else involved in it.

My hunch is the ISS will be splashing down in the Pacific by summer 2006.

It's a dead project. Which is sad.

I want my money back! If I'd have paid my taxes by credit card there would be some kind of merchandise warranty refund.

I have no doubt that they planned to replace/repair it... but it was still working, so it wasn't critical. And then the Columbia disaster happened, and nothing could get replaced without tossing it on a Russian rocket. And i can't imagine the red tape involved in that.
