Bad Astronomy in TV miniseries "Revelations"

In yesterday's episode, a space telescope (the Hubble I suppose) noticed something where there's just "empty space". If there was nothing there to see, why was it pointed there? I forget where they said it was in the sky, but someone more familiar with the sky might comment on that.

They said the new star would appear in the east, not the west, at a particular place. Doesn't the star start at the east and finish in the west, every night? The difference would be whether it's immediatly visible being night in Europe on the proper side.

    I'm sure you're right, but . . . that's your problem w/the show?

"Now everyone was giving her that kind of look UFOlogists get when they suddenly say, 'Hey, if you shade your eyes you can see it is just a flock of geese after all.'"

    "You can't erase icing."

"I can't believe it doesn't work! I found it on the internet, man!"
