The future of Star Trek/Star Wars

I read this on the TrekToday site-

    http://www.trektoday.com/news/260405_01.shtml

Anybody else think that the 'real' future of Trek/Wars will be fan made material? Wouldn't surprise me in the least...

    Anybody seen Star Wars: Revelations?

I don't know about the future of Star Trek (and, to be honest, I couldn't possibly care less about it) but I do know what the future of Star Wars holds.

    No more films.

A "3D animated" television series of 25 minute episodes, followed by

A live action television series, set between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope.

The best news is that George Lucas is not writing, or even producing, them. They will be somewhat like the Young Indiana Jones series, and Kevin Smith is strongly rumoured to be writing at least one episode.

I think that as far as copyright laws, as long as the fans are not trying to make a profit or passing it off as official canon, they are in the clear.

Regarding the upcoming Star Wars TV shows: does anyone else have that interview on their old VHS copy with Lucas where he states he doesn't want to do something where it goes on forever and forever like Star Trek? Hmmmm.

This one is set to take place between movies III and IV so it won't go on indefinately. I for one would liked to have seen a star trek type show about SW.

Well, Star Wars already has the expanded universe, which is regarded as quasi-cannon, and allows the authors to make a profit on the books. I have no idea if it includes other media than books, but I can see no reason why it can't. So a large portion of SW stuff is already fan-made.

The expanded universe has the potential to continue for ages like trek, but all Lucas has to do is assign someone (probably the copright holder) to say weather a submitted work gets in or not.

this board has been giving me a lot of trouble today

    Actually that is not true.

Whether or not profit is involved for the fans is a consideration, but it is not an end-all. In the end if you publically display a work based on the characters and situations of Star Wars without prior explicate permission, the copyright owner has every right to shut you down with a few exceptions like brief excerpts, parodies, etc. Now in practice, Lucas is going to allow fan fiction. But that is a choice. A good choice, but a choice nethertheless. And you will still be required to include a statement of who is the copyright, etc. owner is.

Jedi don't wait twenty years for sequels. (Or something like that.)

There's a good 20 years between III and IV. In terms of television series, that's close enough to "indefinitely" for me.
