I know a little about it but not altitude or if its a Sun/cosmic radiation.?
How "thick" is it for example,this i dont know.
Has it anything to do with the aurora borealis that is SPECTACULAR in Sweden this time of year. :P

Maybe that space elevator will discharge its own corridor.

It might ever get built, but for now on it certainly is not just lack of funding that is holding the project down as somee claim... Compared to the material properties needed for strength, the influence of the van Allen Belts is almost a trivial influence on a space elevator.
I had the chance to write up into a group that will be making a preliminary space elevator design, but I chose other projects. I feel little need to spend 5000 man hours into a feasibility analysis that will come out with material properties we can't even dream at this moment. I'm glad that some people do want to do it, as otherwise we wouldn't know just what technology it would take. I'm just a bit too much of a realist to spend 10 full weeks non stop on it when I have the opportunity to spend them on designing things like a new Beluga or my primary choice: an air taxi 8). I chose the air taxi above the beluga, becuse it is about preliminary designs. If it would have been an end design, I would hve gone for the Beluga. But in a preliminary design, I think I can put more creativity into the air taxi.

The assertion that the inner belt is populated by cosmic radiation rather than Sun/Earth interactions is one I've never heard before. Maybe it's just because I don't deal with inner belt people or failed to pay attention somewhere.
Dr. Stern has a fairly complete site which also includes this statement so it's not just a garbling. Looks like a good site, though.
(psst...the only Nobel for work in space physics was given to a Swede, Hans Alfven).
