    There's Hope!

Here is an interview with a friend of mine. For those of you who don't care to read the whole thing, he's an actual scientist who is working on the Cassini mission, and now he's the science advisor for the Battlestar Galactica series!

It hasn't started here in the U.S. yet, but I understand it's been showing over in Great Britain. I can't wait to see if having a real scientist advise them is making a difference. 8)

    That's cool.

But I must admit I am jealous. I met Richard Hatch at a con some years ago (see here, where I ironically wonder about his need for a science advisor...), and we talked at length about the science of his "Wars of Magellan" and his wanting to remake BG. I had hope, until about a year ago, of being involved on the project. Oh well. At least I get to see the show now!

I completely understand. I've been jealous myself over the years. However, I don't have the patience to stay in L.A. and make the contacts. This man rarely sleeps, and that's something I can't live without. I would imagine he already had Dr. Grazier at the time you spoke to him, because he's been helping him with BG novels for the past few years as well. It's just a timing thing. Otherwise I'm sure Richard would have taken you up on the offer, since he likes to get it right.

I haven't met Richard Hatch myself, but then, I was practically a baby when I watched the original BG, and I'd prefer to remember him as Apollo, or that guy on The Streets of San Francisco.

Star Trek: TNG had a science PhD working as the science consultant for a few years. That didn't mean he didn't get overruled by the writing and production staff. If they liked the story, the science objections got beamed overboard.

I can think of two episoded in particular - the "we seeded the cosmos with our DNA and it was a computer rogram" one, and the other one that had the "baryon sweep" (it was supposed to be exotic antimatter baryons). In both cases the science objections were tossed for the convenience of the story.

OTOH, it's science fiction. You do get to make stuff up.

He didn't take over Mike Douglas's role as Inspector Steve Keller--but you mean the role of second banana, right?

That is what I meant, so no luck on thinking I was mistaken this time. [-X
