This is astronomy related in fact!

Today we were watching a video of the Ulysses space mission in college. As the voiceover failed, we had only the background music to listen to. The tune used resembled a tune we all knew, but was somewhat different. I tried quickly to play the original tune. It is not correct, but might be clear enough for you to recognize it.

The first two chords are rather correct. I play the song from memory, which is difficult as it has been a looooong time since I heard it. We were all curious to know which tune it is (the original one)!

The last time such a thing occured to me, we ended up singing the tune from Laurel&Hardy with a project team of 10 without knowing which tune it was

I made a better version of the MIDI (same URL). I've invented the notes to form the loop, the tune itself is as in my memory now. I hope someone recognizes it, or we'll be still discussing this for days in college

Can you give us any other clues? Who produced the film (NASA, news organization, National Geographic, etc.)? Do you have any date information (e.g., copyright date)? Did you recognize the narrator's voice? Anything would help. Thanks.

The music in the movie was similar to the piece we know. It wasn't the actual piece, just some stolen melody. So you shouldn't be looking in the movie. But if you're interested:

The movie was an ESA movie concerning teh Ulysses mission. I have no idea on date or anything, as I haven't seen beginning nor end of teh movie, just a part. The problem with the sound tape was that there was NO narrator, so no info there either. But again, I think the solution lies in teh melody I've given, which comes closer to the original than the movie tune. I am not looking for the movie tune, but for the original.

I believe the original was an instrumental piece too, possibly piano + strings. But I'm not sure about anything except for teh general line of the tune.

At least I've got one confirmation that the MIDI is recognizable, when misses heard it she said "I do know the tune, but I don't know the title" :roll: I need some sleep now! Hopefully someone has found out what it is by tomorrow...

Oh, I can't find the title or author, but I do knowit, it's one of those muzak favourites, very cheesy, the thing you can find on 'Romantic moods' or albums like that. Between the two 'parts' of your midi, there comes a descending violin part, I think, something like de-de-de-de de-de-de-de du-du-du-du dum (de-de is decsending, du-du is going up again I believe). Richard Clayderman?

I'm searching his songs now. We didn't know which song, so it might as well be very cheesy indeed (as I said, the last time it turned out to be the Laurel&Hardy theme )

OMG how did he make that song SO "happy feeling" sugar-sweet?? Give that song to Vangelis, and you'll end up with something that at times probably is bombastic as hell, but at least your amplifier won't get totally drooled together while playing it... Not everything needs to be rough hardrock energy, but even sensitive romantic piano music can have it's rough edge. Take "petite fille de la mer": sweet romantic top layer, but a sad mood in the background. And if you don't listen with enough attention, you lose the melody.
