AOL Files Lawsuit Against IM 'Spim'

AOL Files Lawsuit Against IM 'Spim'
America Online Inc. said Thursday it had filed a federal lawsuit accusing numerous unnamed defendants of violating federal and state laws by sending bulk messages known as "spim" to instant message accounts and Internet chat rooms.
I rarely do IM, and I never do the chat rooms. Now I know why.

I think they also use SPIM when referring to spam received on mobile phones (been getting a LOT of that recently).

I got rid of the cell phone at the end of 2001. It was to easy for people to contact me. I like my privacy.

I liked having a cell, but I'd hate to get called on it. They have an off button for a reason. Someday, I'll get one of my own, instead of just stealing Dad's.

Hear, hear. People are usually a bit surprised that I, a tech geek, don't own a cell phone.

It's not about just shutting it off. It's about having no expectations of having to return a call, because someone knows you will see the message.

    Whats more anoying:
    1. A company that charges $15 a month more for standard dial up service than alomst all other services, yet somehow says their service is better than everyone elses even tought everything they give is available for free.
    or
    2. A person that randomly sends you e-mails and links to capture your computers information to steal your identity and money.

Hard choice... I go for number one. They screw(ed) millions, the latter only hundreds.

Meh. I've rarely received IM spam. I got more random harassing messages from trolls than actual ads or requests to "come and see my webcam."

I get junk ICQ messages, I don't get AOL IM spam. If you make yourself available to search on AIM, you get spam. Disable that.

Once I enabled it for the heck of it, I got 2 spams within 60 seconds, it was unbelievable.

Total tech geek, don't own a cell phone either. Thats only because I'm picky, I want a PDA phone that I can use AIM, run IRC, and still surf the net.

I personally don't think that AOL is the spawn of satan cause even if they charge more they obviously provide something people want else they wouldn't around. And I personally love the fact that they give you AIM for free seeing as I live on there (don't get spimmed tho because I don't allow people to search for me).
Got a cell phone as a Christmas present last year but basically I leave it in my room. Its perk is it's free to my family and free long distance after 9pm/ weekends, so as a result I don't even know my dorm room's number.

Umm... AOL, AFAIK, is the only ISP that gives you its own popup ads. It also requires you to use its browser, which is very slow and very insecure, being based on Internet Explorer's rendering engine. As for AIM, there are a bunch of free chat clients out there. Want an e-mail client other than Outlook/Outlook Express? Forget AOL, just download Thunderbird.

Seriously, any of the stuff they provide is downloadable for free. Get DSL - heck, get a 56K dialup connection and, if your phone lines don't suck, you might as well already have the software you want.

(Yes, some people just seem to have bad connections... No idea what the reasons are, but I have been in households where a 56K modem gives speeds of 3K, and others where 33K modems give 56K speeds.)
