A New Species of Type Ia Supernova?

Artist’s conception of a binary star system that produces recurrent novae, and ultimately, the supernova PTF 11kx. (Credit: Romano Corradi and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias) Although they have been used as the “standard candles” of cosmic distance measurement for decades, Type Ia supernovae can result from different kinds of star systems, according to [...]

This makes them a bit less of a precisely standard candle, but just how much deviation should we be seeing? This paper examines that.
If different types of stars are exploding in different environments; and these binary events are susceptable to different levels of dust extinction and different viewing angles; much of the calibrated tightness of these events should be filed away as wishfull thinking.

That said; the empirical evidence still seems to point to a tighter relationship than this latest set of evidence suggests. Something is still missing.

Because I'd like to know the context of the Antoniseb quote.
