Professor Sir Bernard Lovell has passed aged 98.
His was the big name at the beginning of the
space age with his new giant radio telescope.
It was a great project brought to fruition
by the engineer Husband.
Money was short at the end until an industrialist
stepped in. Lovells' book on the building of the
big dish has a copy of a cartoon at the time.
He is in rags with his telescope while some
kids walk past. Each with an evil smirk on
their faces, each carrying armfuls of rockets
and missiles. One has a flying helmet, the next
a sailor suit and the last army fatigues. Yes
the military had their millions while science
struggled.
