So are all my PM's gone?

It says it's stored but the inbox is empty?

I would hope it did not get deleted.

If you are not aware, the merger caused problems with many people's PMs, including moderators and admins. The problem is being worked on. We don't know yet if it can be fixed. Stay tuned...

If it helps at all, I'm in the same boat - all my pre-merger PMs are missing.
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.

Hmm. Mine aren't. An interesting data point, but I don't know what it means.

I'm not sure there's anything in it; I don't keep sent PMs.

    Wild speculation:

Something was set to remove duplicate files.
One person's received PM is another person's sent PM.
Only one or the other was retained.

I hope that isn't what happened.

Just another data point.. all my old Inbox messages seem to be there, along with a few empty 1 Jan 1970 ones. But my sent box is populated with multiple empty 1 Jan 1970 messages, and nothing else. Doesn't bother me - I'm here to discuss stuff publicly, not behind the scenes..

As another data point everything seems fine for me, both inbox and sent box are populated properly, dating back to over a year ago.

Another data point: all of my PMs (with apologies to Monique) are also present and accounted for. I backed everything up just before the merger, if that has any bearing.

Part of the issue with me might be that I established an account at CosmoQuest under the same name before the merger.

    A voice from beyond ...

I leave for a couple of years and you guys change all the locks ...
    Another data point, FWIW:
I came by recently to PM someone, just after the migration to CosmoQuest. Got no reply. I found my sent box contained just two PMs, which is as I expected - I try to be conscientious about not cluttering up other people's server space when I'm not active on their forum, so I kept my BAUT mailbox severely trimmed. My one [sent] pre-CosmoQuest PM was properly dated with accessible text; but what I take to be my [sent] post-CosmoQuest PM was an inaccessible file with a 1970 date.
This suggests the problem isn't entirely with the migration process, I think.

I am in the same boat as ToSeek.

Just for an extra data point, it's the same with me.
Made what appears to have been the mistake of making an account on QC before the merger, now have one actual message in my inbox while it says that "You have 1,262 messages stored, of a total 5,000 allowed." but those 1,261 other messages are nowhere to be found.

It doesn't seem to have anything to do with accounts on CQ per se--I checked, and hhEb09'1 SENT messages are blanked too.

I did the same, but I have my PM's.

That obviates *any* adverse aspects of the BAUT-to-CosmoQuest merge. :)

I fully concur. I think many of us had diverse ideas as to the consequences of the merger, but none of us thought of grant's reappearance :)

You guys are kind, but it wasn't my intention to resume posting in the scientific forum - so I'm not really *back*, as such.
My occasional PMs bring me in and out (hence this recent post to try to help sort out the PM issue), but I doubt if I'll be doing much of anything else hereabouts ... with the exception of one old OTB thread I recently found while Googling something else, which I'm tempted to raise from the dead sometime. :)

I wish I could give you all more information on progress here, but to be honest, the feedback we (as in mods) have been getting has been... less than hoped for. I'm sure there are reasons for that, and we won't forget to keep pushing on this particular item. It may be of little import to some, but perhaps others have lost copies of contact details or other info important to them.

Investigating this requires DB level access, and the ability to examine the conversion script. There is nothing anybody can reasonably be expected to do from the panel side of this.

    Any update on this problem?

  25. #25
Currently it looks like I've lost 1200+ messages, which I consider a major loss as they included the conversation with Grant Hutchison where he helped me understand the hospital's medical records of my old girlfriend up until the time she died.

Well, if you have a backup from the old site somewhere still, perhaps the data can be extracted from that separately. I don't know VB, but is there a chance the plaintext files could be extracted and emailed to users?

Do the people (or does the person) working on the problem
need more help? Probably not from me, but someone?

Could a drastically limited form of the forum be put up just
for people to retrieve their own PM's? Nothing new could
be posted, but all existing private messages and maybe all
public messages, too, could be read? This would either be
a stopgap or a last resort. It would be quite a bit of work
for users but a lot less work for sysops.

Ok, here's my two cents worth. Seems all of my sent messages are here(back to 2006). I am able to view my received messages going back to 19 April, 2009. Anything after that (well, the last 66) are not viewable and have a date of 1 Jan 1970.

Still have everything gone from before the merger.
Not whining (quite yet), just a data point since Tensor's might sound like it's been mostly fixed.

Still gone. Some sort of prognosis from someone with the required access would be much appreciated.
Alternatively, I'd be happy with a filtered sql dump from the backup and would be quite happy to pay for the time needed to write the filter.
