    Oz, The Great and Powerful

Talk about torn... On the one hand, Sam Raimi and James Franco. On the other hand, they're trouncing on the Wicked book series, which I thought was fantastic, and they're REALLY starting to demonstrate just how badly out of ideas Hollywood is.

I wish someone would grow a pair and put half the level of effort that this film trailer obviously shows, and try something NEW.

Personally, I'd like to see a good and proper adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, but that's me. I also don't like James Franco very much.

New? Original? But there's still 98% of old movies and TV shows that haven't been remade yet!

That's part of what I'm dreading here. 1) They won't have the Witch of the East, and 2) the slippers won't be silver...

    *sigh*

Maybe it's just me, and maybe it's difficult to tell from the trailer, but this film seems to suffer from the same problem that so many other films have fallen victim to: even with a respected director and all of the effects available today, it lacks a soul, or a heart.

Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Well, you know, they can get a heart, but I don't think the Wizard ever offered anyone a soul.

And, yes, the slippers are a strong part of what I'm afraid they'll get wrong. There should be four witches (including the one who dies at the beginning, of course) and silver shoes!

I recollect reading that for the movie they first tried silver shoes but they didn't photograph with the proper pizzaz.

I have always enjoyed the '39 Oz film. Some fair jabs, for the times.

I grew up on the '39 film and only read the book as an adult. I never had a problem with it-- it's two separate continuities, each with their own story.

Whereas I recollect reading that they never even considered silver, having decided already that it wouldn't look as snazzy. (If you've ever seen The Adventures of Robin Hood, you will know how determined they were to get their money's worth from Technicolor!) Margaret Hamilton complained bitterly, though not quite as much as over the apparent attempts to kill half the cast through unsafe work environment. Given that, you know, she was one of the ones to suffer for it!
