    Help Me Pick a Name

I'm putting together a website for finding places to do space stuff, and I need a name for the site. It's going to be a map of planetariums, observatories, space museums, etc.

Here's my initial start, but problem is, "Astronomy-Related Activities Map" sounds really dorky. I need the help of you clever folks to brainstorm something snappy. Catchy, yet unique enough it's not already taken as a dot com. Preferably easy to remember or Googleable.

    Any ideas?

    "Stellar Cartography"

sounds better than "Space Map" and even has a favorite Start Trek reference.

How about space-stuff.com or space-places.com. Both names are available.

I saw that you had the Udvar-Hazy Center outside of Washington DC, but not the main National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall.

Hi KaiYeves, thanks for pointing that out. The idea, eventually, will be for people to use the form to enter in additional places because it saves me the a lot of data entry work(I can slurp user entered data to the map in bulk). If you have a moment, give it a try!

A few folks have made submissions, but for now at least, I'm doing as much as I can in order reach critical mass.

How about calling it Cosmo Quest, you'll even get a large active forum automatically?

IMO, Stellar Cartography kind of implies that it's a map of space, rather than a map of places to observe space. Just my 2 cents

This was my initial reaction as well, and so I went with Space Places... BUT, it seems to have struck a chord with the folks here (I myself am unfamiliar with the reference), so I am pondering doing something with that as well. What in particular makes people excited about it? Do they want it to display just real stars or fictional artifacts? Let me know!

    Thanks,

    John

Hey R.A.F., thanks for taking the time to check for your favorite Space Place! I'll keep your "best thing is it's free" in mind, as it makes me think about adding descriptions...

The term "Stellar Cartography" was used in some of the Star Trek: Next Generation episodes, and at least one of the ST:NG movies. If you Google the term, Star Trek websites are the first links you get.

Stellar cartography is the science and practice of making maps and projections of space. The United Federation of Planets and other space faring cultures have various different systems to organize and catalog space and objects in space. One who specializes in this science is known as a stellar cartographer.
I think that's why people liked the name (it was for me), but I can also see it might lead to some confusion.

So is there any interest in a Stellar Cartography as a different website, separate from space-places.com, that does something fun or useful?

    Thanks!

If you click here, you'll find hundreds (if not more than a thousand) links to astronomical software.
