Eye-roll and chuckle (since the smileys aren't working).

I do hope he is being funny, but I wasn't completely sure. If he is serious, he needs to take a couple of deep breathes.

Why should Orion be a hunter, and not a bus driver, or a civil-rights lawyer, or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company? Because he's always been a hunter. Quod erat demonstrandum.

    He's found a hook, but it's a dull one.
So the next time your son or daughter points at the heavens and tugs your sleeve to ask, What is it?—just do the kid a favor. Don't say a word.
Yeah, next time your kid talks to you, don't say anything, not the facts, not a story, not a fabrication, nothing. Otherwise, they might grow up educated, and that's an evil imposition of our own worldview.

I think that's where he was going with this. :)

If I could be sure the author is writing in jest, it would be good for a chuckle. I don't know anything else about him and I cannot get any nonverbal cues such as body language from the printed column. Images of these ancient flights of fancy oppress his mind only if he allows them to do so, and I would cheerfully tell him that they do not oppress my mind, and probably not the minds of the vast majority of our stargazers. If he really is ill at ease with all of this, I wish he would take a deep breath and do some serious soul searching.

These ancient images give us a fascinating window to the customs and folklore of our ancient ancestors, and we should be grateful to successive generations of people who have handed them down to us.
