    Indagare,

I moved your thread from OTB to Science & Technology; I think you'll get a better response here.

Here is a link to a recent thread from S&T on fusion

Thanks for the move, Swift. I really wasn't sure if here or OTB would have been best.

    Thanks also for that link!

It will always be available 20 years from now
(ohoh, now I am insulting a few colleagues of mine)

lol...too true (as a power source), but at least it looks like there's still a future for fusion engineers:

The ZaP project investigates the concept of using sheared axial flows to provide complete stability without adversely affecting the advantageous properties of the Z-pinch (no applied fields, high temperatures, high densities, unity average beta, and only perpendicular heat conduction). The experiment produces a Z-pinch plasma that is 100 cm long with a 1 cm radius..."In order to get smaller feature sizes on silicon, the industry has to go to shorter wavelength light," said Uri Shumlak, a UW professor of aeronautics and astronautics. “We’re able to produce that light with enough power that it can be used to manufacture microchips.” The UW beam lasts up to 1,000 times longer than competing technologies and provides more control over the million-degree plasma that produces the light.

I wonder if that could be combined with this in some fashion:

Looks to be compact, so this might be made in arrays?

Yet another entrant, using a hybrid between magnetic fusion and inertial confinement fusion: http://www.generalfusion.com/
The Science tab is kind of interesting, but again these cats are years out

A combination of different methods might be the key. I wish them all the best.
