The actual change-over may happen on July 5th... if not it will happen in early August... it depends on software getting tested successfully.
If it does happen on July 5th, both forums will be down for most of that day.
After the change: The rules will be the same. Our banned members will still be banned. There will be one or two new moderators. There will be several more sections pertaining to citizen-science and astronomy education.
When I know more about what to expect, I'll post it.

Is it related to this place?

It appears to be related to this place: http://cosmoquest.org/. The website seems to be geared toward astronomy outreach and education, and possibly STEM outreach in general. (STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.) This seems to the thing that Phil, Fraser, and others are doing right now. If any of you saw the BA's live chat during the Venus transit, that seems to have been done with this group.
I took a quick look at their forum, and it's pretty small. If I may speculate, I'd guess that Fraser, et. al., want to combine the little board with the big board while keeping the CosmoQuest brand. Sure, the name is a bit cheesy, but there is a good reason for that. I don't object to that and I don't think we should object to that as a whole.
This will bring in the audience that we stay family friendly for but it won't change anything we are doing currently. If we are going to be affiliated with a new website, why not take on its name? It's not like we haven't done that before.
The http://www.cosmoquest.com versus http://www.cosmoquest.org thing doesn't help, in my view.
(I can see myself saying in discussions elsewhere "no, not that 'cosmoquest'...".)
Still, I don't want to be too negative about it. I'll be staying a member. (It's not like I've seen anywhere better than BAUT, whatever its name is. If Fraser sees cosmoquest as equivalent (in quality, style and content), that's fine).

Will we need a new logo?

cosmosquest, with the 's' would be better.
oh I see that is taken by a computer game website.
Just putting in my vote for "I don't care what it's called - it's a great bunch of people with some nice moderators and a good rule book."
You can call it Monkey Tennis for all I care. Astonishing that 3 pages of people actually care about it.
Works for me. NUT isn't bad either
The first thing to do is to invent a feisty acronym for the thing after all - only then can the words it nominally stands for be decided.
That said, I think of the suggestions floated so far Universe Today gets my vote as well. The acronym for that would be UNTO (or more properly, UnTo) BTW which isn't as good as SAD or NUT but still pretty decent. I'll leave to somebody else to compose a stirring catchphrase along the lines of "Do UnTo others as you would have them do unto you".
The dog, the dog, he's at it again!
I'd go for "Galaxy Quest"

I'm not going to be too bothered if it's cosmoquest, but I'd prefer something else. I'd like Universe Today Forum, but I'd understand if Fraser wouldn't want that because of the possible confusion between the site and the forum.

Eurgh. CosmoQuest? - what the heck is a 'cosmo'? It's like slapping the ghost of Carl Sagan in the face, if you ask me.
I often make references at other forums to BAUT, and I think the fact that it is *known* and currently doesn't sound like a game for the Commodore 64 may actually help a little with credibility...
Anyway, make mine (n+1)thed for *anything* other than cosmoquest. I'll be very disappointed to see the BAUT name lost, and even more disappointed to see that one replace it.
The only Cosmo I've heard of is this gentleman.
As is this.
But as easy as this be to make fun of, it is the name we are getting. Hopefully Shakespeare's old statement about roses smelling the same no matter what you call them can apply here.

I'm sure the name won't grow on me, and the logo doesn't help. But since I haven't been active here lately anyway, I suppose it won't make a difference.

Most of the people listed as moderators and admins on the other forum will not be moderators and admins after the merge. They are merely IT support people with privilege to kill spam. One or two of their moderators will be moderators in the merged forum... plus we're currently down one, after Moose and pzpfw dropped out, and slang joined up. The mod team will still be very familiar to you all.

I went to school with Cosmo Quest; Johnny's cousin, y'know, more of a stay-at-home type so they didn't put him in the show.
But I'd prefer almost any other name for this forum. How about Rational Astronomy Today?![]()
