    fourthded.
And not just kid'ish. It seems like two overrused words in the advertising world.
Between the word cosmo and quest, all sorts of images start popping into my head from Cosmopolitan to the Holy Grail. Although knowing how any reference to <you know> take a life of their own, maybe it's appropriate.

On the other hand "Punch Paul Beardsley If You See Him" is clumsy too. If we go that route, I suggest shortening it to "Punch Beardsley".

I lived through the baut conversion after a minor panic about it. I guess I'll handle this one.

ETA: crossed posts with Perikles... make it fithded.

I'd never heard of Cosmoquest, but it sounds like it has something to do with a popular women's magazine here in the states.

"Punch Beardsley" does have a certain ring to it... hey, what am I saying?

Personally, I would be sad if the Bad Astronomy part were dropped. I'm aware that we don't really have any connection to Phil anymore, that he hasn't really been around in years. However, I've always regretted that; I like Phil. I came to the Bad Astronomy site many times before clicking on the link to the forum, and I was a member long before the merger. If we're going to drop the name, well, I'll cope. I'll cope no matter what it's called. I'll still wish it were otherwise.

Universe Today would be far better.

Although I came from the Bad Astronomy side, I'm with group who recommends naming it Universe Today. Although I would request we add "Punch Beardsley" sub forum, just because it sounds like so much fun.

I would vote for Universe Today as well.

CosmoQuest sounds a bit like some product name you could order in one of those late-night tv commercials/demonstrations. I'd vote for anything that is more plain descriptive sounding, rather than something sounding like a commercialized product, be it Universe Today or simply Astronomy Forums or something like that.

I note the OP mentions Fraser and Pamela, but not Phil (except by "et al").

I'm very much on the hate CosmosQuest, like UniverseToday side.

This. That's a name that's trying way too hard to be hip and edgy. And it's not. It's just not. I'd agree that going with just Universe Today would be much better. UT's the largest of the three original contingents anyway. So if we can't find a good original name to encapsulate us all, I'd be agreeable to that.

What is the treatment for vapors and does it involve changes in pressure and temperature?

Treating the vapors is best done by a recuperative reverse Brayton cycle system. This permits them to be converted to an easily handled liquid state.

I'm not sure why, but I don't like it either... even if Cary Grant was a member. Now, Uma Thurman, maybe.

We all like Phil, of course, but "Bad Astronomy" is similar to BAUT in that it needs to be explained to people. We debunk bad astronomy, but that's not mentioned in the name.

Universe Today Forums? Works for me.

Makes me want to type in all my commands, actually.

    : inventory
    In your pocket, you see:
    A telescope.
    Car keys.
    Pocket lint.
    : look at telescope
Is that a Meade 16" Dobsonian in your pocket or are you just... ah, nevermind.
    : check weather
It's cloudy today. It's cloudy every day.
    : move to Tahiti
    Command not understood.

Only if you hit him hard enough to "ring his bell".

While I'm using a post for silliness, I might as well get all my bases covered....

I, for one, welcome our new Cosmoquest (or whatever it will be called) overlords.

There, glad I got that taken care of.. now I got to clean the mandrake's cage.

I've suggested an alternative for the name to Fraser... we'll see if it flies. I don't want to mention it publicly for various reasons until it is accepted/rejected.

He just wants to intimidate them with his postcount.

Cosmoquest is a bit cheesy, but it's probably along the lines of something I'd come up with. But, IMO, we are far enough removed from our Bad Astronomy origins that I'm fine with a name change. Frankly, as long as we keep the Order of Kilopi rank and the Proving Grounds section, I'll thank Fraser for keeping the forum open and go along with his decision.

I'll (n=n+1)th the dislike of CosmoQuest as a name for the combined forum.

    If I may.

The earlier suggestions don't really represent what the forum is about, at least to me.

I would suggest "Science and Astronomy Discussion", or something along this line.

CosmoQuest sounds entirely new-age-ish for my taste.

How about New Universe Today...or NUT, for short?

Otherwise...even though I'm originally from the old BA board...I'm with the others in being for Universe Today.
