Angry When sites can't be accessed >:-(

I've been unable to access Twitter the past 1/2 hour.

Sometimes this occurs with BAUT too, or other sites.

    Why is this?

Obviously my DSL connection is fine (posting and working now).

Why do sites sometimes "go down"? Is it their server or what?

About 5 minutes ago I Googled with "Twitter down." Some lady w/MSNBC posted "8 minutes ago" that Twitter is down ... and we Twitter fans are panicking.

I did just now click your link out of curiosity. Yep; still an issue.

Which is a relief, but still sad.

    I need my CuddlyBantha fix!

It depends. Sometimes it's the server. Sometimes the software that runs the website. Sometimes the database that feeds the software. Sometimes the datacenter where the website (and thousands others) are hosted. Sometimes an important traffic hub somewhere on the internet goes down, and it takes time to re-route stuff. Sometimes a big denial of service attack can have bad effects on parts of the internet. Sometimes a server at your ISP is down, and your computer only remembers the address for some sites, and not others.. really, there are too many possibilities to list, and too many to give even an educated guess at what might be wrong in your case.

    Thanks. Yes, I suppose.

    Twitter now back up.

Apparently down about 45 minutes (last post vs most recent).

And then, ironically, BAUT was inaccessible for about a minute.

It kinda speaks to the reliability of the Net that there is more than one place to see if a site is working.

The large company I used to work for had a site like that for their INTERNAL network! It was pretty useful at times.
