    cosmic rays, why do they correlate with sunspots?

    Reminded that high energy cosmic rays source(s) remain mysterious, I wonder about their pattern of arrival. The charged ones are deflected by the Earth field, with maximum protection at the equator, but the pattern correlates with the sunspot cycle. They arrive from all directions in 11 year (approx) bursts, the Earth field surely does not change that much, what is the mechanism of their (presumed) deflection?

    IIRC, it's the strength/density of the solar wind blocking them.

    Its like Ara Pacis said.

    According to solar physicist Pete Riley it is because they cant cross the current sheet and flow with it, and the current sheet shape is altered by solar activity.

    thanks but for clarity do they block or divert? These super high energy particles would be hard to stop.

    I'm no expert, but the view I have of the current sheet is it would be divert rather than block.

    Im sure tusenfem would know.
