    Chess question - opening theory

Here's a chess question someone asked me. ( I can't answer it and I refuse to join a Chess forum just to find the answer.)

After the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 if White plays 3.Nf3 then (in master level play) Black often plays the Queen's Indian Defense with 3...b6. But if White plays 3.Nc3 then Black rarely plays 3...b6. Why?

Instead, Black would probably play 3...Bb4, the Nimzo-Indian defense

In amateur play it opens up the possibility of black bishop pinning the white knight, at least that's what happens to me.

i usually just move one of the little guys in the front forward and hope that the other player won't tell me that i can't move it that way..

The last game I played was against a six year old who brought his knights out too far and got them chased back by my pawns. It make me wonder if I should worry about controlling the center of the board when it's behind my pawn structure.

we used to play chess during my apprenticeship, then along came a good Spanish exchange guy who beat everyone with a "pawn only" game until basically the opponent opened up and made an error he quickly exploited. There is a computer player program which uses this infuriating tactic, just shifting his rook back and forth as you advance and then suddenly finds a weakness and you lose three pieces in a row! Obviously a better player would not fall for it.

    Almost sounds like Alekhine's Defence.
