Well you experts know more than I on this, so no big deal...interesting links though...

I often wondered why they used this word/origin for the systems before, but that was before the net, so I never looked it up!!

Thanks for the info, Stutefish. You can understand my concern, I'm sure!

Substitude "deadband" then. They mean the same thing in engineering, except "deadband" is more colloquial than "hysteresis."

Or even "lag" or "delay". I think it is basically a lag between
causing an event and getting feedback from that event.

The term "hysteresis" is derived from ὑστέρησις (husterésis); an ancient Greek word meaning "deficiency" or "lagging behind".
Hysteria, the word you dislike with good reason, is from ὑστέρα (hustera); the Greek word for "uterus" as you, but possibly not everyone else, know.
So the etymology is not what it sounds like.

That they may still be related if ὑστέρησις and ὑστέρα have common origins in Greek would be a coincidence as they got transferred to English after the words got different meanings in Greek.

As an Engineer I have to say I didn't noticed the similarity in the words until it was brought up here (the same terms are used in Danish for the same things). It's not a source of any jokes I know of. This is not a challenge to invent one.

Frankly, I suspect hardly anyone thinks about it. My study of the history of mental illness, especially as it relates to women, makes me a bit more sensitive to the idea than probably most people have any reason to be.

    Thanks,
The discussion of Apollo control systems is sort of on topic, but really doesn't have anything to do with the OP. The linguistics stuff isn't even close.

I'm sure I'll get complaints in the Overmoderation thread, but this has become a serious thread-hijack. But if we only apply the rules to the CT believers, then we are really not being fair. This thread is closed.

If you wish to explain why it should be reopened, you can report this post.

And enio, if you want to continue your discussion, Report this post and we'll reopen it. On the flip side, if you try to start this same thing in a new thread, after abandoning this one, you will receive an infraction - sea-gulling Conspiracy Theories on BAUT is not acceptable behavior.
