I caught this video article on CNN this afternoon. Apparently, NASA has begun launching sensors into a 200-mile ballistic trajectory to study the effects of auroras on LEO satellites, such as GPS, comm, etc. The fact that the media is suddenly taking notice of this kind of research isn't what I find interesting, though. To me, the curiosity is that NASA seemed to wait so long before studying the effects on satellites; I was surprised that this research didn't happen on this scale a couple of decades ago.
