Chances of aliens finding Earth disappearing
Frank Drake's point, made at a SETI workshop at Harvard University on Friday, is that television services are increasingly being delivered by technologies that do not leak radio frequencies into space.
But he added that in some ways the observation is good news for SETI, as it means that the failure of Earth-based observers to detect aliens so far may be less worrisome than it would otherwise seem.

The good news being that, if other civilizations have advanced similarly, then we may never expose them selves accidently? Yeah, I can see the programme directors jumping for joy at that one.

Yet another reason, why I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Kardashev Level 1 Civilization, within 10 Light Years of us.
We'd never be able to detect it, not with Current Technology, anyway.
Heck, there could be a Burgeoning K-2 Civillization around Alpha Centauri, a.k.a. Rigil Kent, and we probably wouldn't know.
But, they might be able to Detect Us, Hmmm, I feel a Science Fiction Novel, coming on ....

I don't see how this helps anything, though. It's sort of like saying I can look for a true to life Klingon Bird of Prey, but have a couple of reasons for not being able to find it: It never existed, it did exist, but it was destroyed, or it's cloaked. Well, no. Now that we realize that this could be the reason we aren't seeing any transmissions, we can change our approach and look for different indicators of life. Not quite sure how to do it, but it must be possible.

We could just wait for Nearby Stars to start Exhibiting Dyson Shells, but by that point, we might Be The Ones Erecting them.
Unfortunately, there aren't too many other Easily Visible Signifiers of Intelligence, of course, we could just Announce Ourselves by Beaming Lasers into Every Neighbouring Star System, but, that might just be A Good Way to Say, "Dinner's On!"

Picture our own Situation:
Our Sun, now sits in The Center of a Spherical Shell of Radio Waves, which are now Beginning to Taper off.
What if every Civillization goes through this Progression, a 90 Year Rise in Radio Production, followed by a Peak, and then a Drop-Off, over the Next 90; Thanks to The Inverse Square Law, of Radio Propagation, we might be Inside The Radio Bubble, of All but The Most Distant, Civillizations, Ergo, Nothin' to Detect, at Least by Radio ...

Not to get bogged down on a Aliens Gone Wild post, but it would seem to be easy enough for someone who has had their morning coffee to calculate the how far the bubble has gone and what systems it has passed through... and at what point it gets so weak as to be lost in the thermal background, if at all.
So where's Lucy now? (Not at the club, if Ricky has his way...) Not counting reruns, 40 light years away?

Also this is an interesting question. If an alien being with no frame of reference watches our media broadcasts would they be able to tell the difference between fact and fiction?
They might have seen films like Aliens,star wars etc and are thinking " I know we should go and talk to our human neighbours but they know some strange people. Best not to get involved."
