The 'X' Crater on Mercury promoted as the new 'Face' on Mars

The story linked to below was posted yesterday. The article deals with a MESSENGER photograph which shows two lines of craters crossing 'X' fashion.

The authors seem to be trying to stir up a conspiracy theory, as the last lines quoted below make clear:

The MESSENGER scientists say the lines are "secondary crater lines".


What that means is outside the field of view are two impact sites. The criss-crossing lines are made up of mounds of "ejecta" thrown up by whatever struck the planet.


So in reality, it's all just a coincidence, albeit a fascinating one.


Or is it?

The 46th comment is a long post which revives a very old HB story. That aliens are on the moon actively reshaping the surface but that NASA is covering it up in some way.

Pfft. They're crater chains, three of them, two of which make the X. The Moon has crater chains as well. Nothing unnatural about that. Although, if you look up posts by erstwhile member craterchains, you'll see where such speculation can lead. How come nobody's made similar noise about the "smiley-face" craters on Mars?

I'd be more impressed if the X was made of two crossing trenches, with perfectly straight edges and meeting at 90-degree angles. At least then we'd know where to dig.
