I’ve updated my Comet Elenin graphics for the JPL orbital solution of 2011 APR 08. The only significant changes are in the magnitude parameters. Based on them the greatest brilliance is expected on 2011 SEP 20 at magnitude +6.4. The IAU now predicts a peak magnitude of +5.8. Those two estimates are much closer to agreement than they had been in the past.
Greatest brilliance will occur when the comet is elongated by only 12.4° from the Sun and is positioned poorly for observers north of the tropics. Perigee (closest approach to Earth) is still expected on 2011 OCT 16 at 0.234 AU. On that date the comet will be elongated a large 71.0° from the Sun with a JPL magnitude estimate of +7.2 and should be easily seen by northern telescopic observers.
