Could Spirit and Opportunity meet ?

Just a thought, although there would be no scientific reason for this, would it be possible to program both Spirit and Opportunity to meet up with each other.

If they were so programmed, would they be able to meet, given available power supplies and solar cell conditions :-?

If I remember correctly, Spirit and Opportunity are on almost opposite sides of Mars. Methinks that it might get a bit difficult for them when the come to some very rocky terrain. Not only that, but they'd also have to travel very long distances. Much longer distances than they were designed for.

It would make quite a heartwarming movie though. Two plucky little rovers having to over all obstacles of a planet to be reunited.

I say as one of the rovers is about to die, send it on a suicide trip to Cydonia where its allowed to bump into as many rocks as it wants, and watch the woowoos go nuts with conspiracy theories, rovers getting silenced, and natural rocks that are actually ancient garden hoses, so we can start debunking new stuff, coz the current stuff is getting old.

Yes but there's only a few months left until Cassini shows up at Saturn. I can't think of any conspiracies they could make up about that one but I'm sure where there's a will there's a way...

It's about 10500 kilometers between Spirit and Opportunity.

The highest travel speed of the rovers so far is about 140 meters per day.

So it will take the rovers at least 102 years to meet each other.

Keep them on hilltops as weather stations, so they can see large scale fronts. Or send one to Cydonia--and have Enterprise pay for its upkeep. They might find some nice rocks that just so happen to be in the way--and can have private investment keep them alive.
