    Universe Expansion

It's said that, because everything is moving away from everything else, the universe must be expanding. Why is this? If everything was wouldn't what we use to use to measure stuff expand also? So everything would appear to be not expanding?
What if the universe was just pulsating? No Big Bang? No Big Crunch?

Those are two separate questions by the way.
And what I mean by everything expanding is, spacetime must also. If I've understood spacetime (which is unlikely), doesn't that include everything, including distance?

Yes, everything in the universe would be expanding if it weren't for gravity. Gravity is like the glue that keeps matter together so that it can resist the expansion of the universe. And could you please explain this "pulsating" universe better? And to your second post, yes distance is also increasing. Space is literally stretching (meaning that the distances between two galaxies is constantly increasing) although all of the matter in the universe is still staying together. (If there was no cosmic expansion, the universe would collapse back into nothing. If there was too much cosmic expansion, then the universe, including molecules and atoms, would fly apart and no galaxies or stars would form)

What I mean by pulsating is it expands, then stops and contracts. Then stops and expands again. Kind of like it's breathing.
That sounds stupid, I might stop posting whilst drunk.

And the other fundamental forces: I'm held together by the electromagnetic force, rather than gravity.
