scotsdavy1,
Just so you know, I have edited your post to convert the image to a link. This is for two reasons - first, large images can be a problem for members with limited download speeds. Second, if you note on the bottom of the image, those are copyrighted, which means they can not be reproduced here without permission.
Please do such images as links in the future. Thanks,
For those wanting to go to the source, it's here: http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=e...11,6.28418&z=7
It looks like it's missing data from one satellite pass. If you looks closely you'll see that in continuation of the black patch there's a similar mainly white patch to the ENE with clear stitching errors along the sides.
In all, it looks like Google only bought a single set of images to cover that area and it wasn't complete.

i am just curious as to why that is all. thought this forum was about things like this.
sorry for asking, won't do it again if this is the response here I am sure of that.
Peace everyone. I know people get suspicious of these kinds of questions, because they have often been followed with "well, that just proves the Lizardmen invaded Earth", or something like that, but let's not jump on people till they show cause. And scotsdavy1, HenrikOlsen gave you a possible answer - did that not answer your question?

you can see that the map is made of stitched stripes (you can see the stitching lines) and one stripe is simply missing. As to why is it missing -- there is no way you can tell. Most likely though, this is due to a human or machine error. It is conceivable that the stripe was removed because it contains a secret military facility or something like that. That, however, is not very probable: it would be trivial to simply airbrush the image (it's completely white anyway) and nobody would notice, while a black rectangle would only raise suspicion.
Or one might paint the secret military facility white, or bury it under the ice, so it was less likely to be spotted by people flying over the icecap (of whom there are many).

Or you could hide it under a large black strip and paint "stitch marks" on the surrounding ice so people will think it is just a data drop out....
Thank goodness it isn't 1:4:9 in proportions.
