    Nominate us for an Award!!

As the BA has blogged on his site, Physics.org are going to give awards for the fave physics sites.

There are a number of catagories, Everyone go and nominate BAUT for an award. We would fit in the Q&A site maybe?

Nothing too subtle about the above, but why not!

Whoa there! Stop waving that knife around. Ok, ok, I'll vote.

For bonus encouragement for the lazy among us, here is the eligability and category definitions info, the link for nominating via twitter, via facebook, or by email.

    Yay BAUT!

    Why?

What do you think sets this site above any others?

Personally I think this site has too many flaws to make it worthy of nomination. If the ATM/CT boards weren't here then maybe I'd consider it though.

    This is a good question.

    My answers:

The enforced politeness has gone beyond surface; most people here seem to respect others' opinions. Ridicule only really occurs when someone expects others to take onboard a bizarre idea that has nothing to support it.

This has led to a feeling of community. A community that consists of some shockingly knowledgable people - and others who are not so knowledgable, but who seek to know more, and who contribute in other ways - if only to provide others with the opportunity to show off their knowledge! Sometimes discussions are concerned with that knowledge. Other times, they are informal chats about the latest film, favourite book and so on.

A few months ago, one of the computers at my place of work (a small company) showed signs of some kind of infection. I am the only person there with any IT knowledge (which is not saying much) so I was the obvious choice to sort it out, even though I didn't have a clue what to do. My first thought was to start a thread on BAUT asking for advice. And advice I got. Patient, clearly-worded, sympathetic, interested. When I tried to do what someone suggested and it didn't work, they gave me further suggestions which eventually did work. It ended with me looking very good in front of my boss.

On this board I have learnt a lot about critical thinking (not least being that such a thing exists!), and developed a deep appreciation for the engineers and others who made the dream of spaceflight into a reality.

And I will add that one of the best things BAUT did was to compartmentalise CT and ATM. On BAUT, you can read a thread about the moon landings with the reassurance that nobody is going to attempt to derail it by saying, "It was all a fake!" (Well, they might attempt it, but the mods won't let it go.) If someone wants to argue that the sun is really a giant lightbulb, they can do so, but not in the middle of a discussion of what causes sunspots - and of course they have to back it up.

BAUT is not without its faults, but I really would be surprised to see a better site. (I'm not saying there isn't one.)

Yeah, well, I think I'll be limiting my participation more in the future. I don't see a reason to leave the board or stop posting yet though.
