I was watching a program yesterday on the science channel about digging to the center of the earth. The part I have a question about is............
The Germans dug a hole down to 34,000 feet but ran into an obstacle. The rock was hot and soft and kept sealing the hole.
The Russians found a way to over come this obstacle and retrieved a core sample from 40,000 feet.
Aforementioned hole that the Russians dug was quite deep true, but not very far down in the grand scheme of things. So now there is a project in the brainstorming phase to utilize the Russian technique to retrieve a core sample from the mantle.
My issue is that the mantle is full of ALOT of hot and unhappy rocks in liquid form. Would said hole be a bit like taking the lid off of a pressure cooker while it is on the stove?
