Interesting! If by 'Twin Cities' the writer refers to Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN then I must require the services of an ophthalmologist and an audiologist -- Inasmuch as I reside ~ 30 miles from said metropolis and neither saw nor heard tell of anything of the sort... But then maybe I need to get out more... ;-)

Seriously, prior to my participation on these fora (and their ilk) I had *NO* idea the sky was so frightening to so many folks?!?! --- Well… I suppose the demise of the USSR left the doomsayers at a loose end??? ;-)

NEAT is an acronym for Near Earth Asteroid Tracking --- A service of NASA's JPL...

NEAT have discovered many comets --- Hence any reference to 'Comet NEAT' is ambiguous sans further designative info...

BTW -- Please don't worry about the article - I assure you it’s pure ** start to finish!!! -- And, I might add, a great discourtesy to the SOHO team!

Hey, groovy! We're practically neighbors. I live in Bloomington.

I must also require the services of an optometrist. (Okay, I regularily do; I'm very nearsighted, but correctable to 20/15.) I haven't seen a thing. I did visit an audiologist recently for unrelated concerns, and was told that I have excellent hearing. Hmmm.... Maybe the website is wrong or invented the quote? Naaaaah!

Seriously, the article does appear to have invented things out of whole cloth, so I find the quote a little suspicious even without considering the fact that I'm an amateur stargazer in the Twin Cities who saw nothing of the kind.

I hope this isn't an ignorant question. Why does the path of the comet appear to be a straight line? I know it has to be an ellipse so this must be a perspective issue. But I can't figure out how you can arrange Earth, Sun, and an orbital path so that the path looks like a straight line without having the path go between or behind the Sun.

I would only suspect that its because of the large orbital path, and your only seeing a small arc of it.

It's probably not orbiting in the same plane we are. I don't think I am good enough with words to describe the situation, but later, if it hasn't been covered, I can draw some pictures.

1) It appears to be a straight line. A small section of an ellipse will approximate a straight line.
2) The comet very probably is either in front of or behind the Sun. Notice that the CME had no effect on the comet, therefore, although they appear to be very close, this is a perspective effect of 2D projection of a 3D event.

I am fairly certain the photos they are showing were from a comet that was around this area back in like May or June or last year when one of large solar flares hit, but I am not sure.

I dunno,l either way, looks like crap to me.

I noticed this guy claimed Feb 2003's weather shutdown was some sort of conspiracy. The late, unlamented Chaiyah banged that drum too.

This was thoroughly debunked by people like nebularain and myself who actually live in the GSFC area. Yes, the weather emergency was real. The Governor ordered non-essential traffic off the roads, subject to a $1000 fine.

Just one example of the kind of flimsy conspirabull promoted on that site.

C/2002 V1 - Has an orbital period of ~ 34,000 years, is presently at a (solar) distance of ~ 5.8 AUs and OUTBOUND.

C/2002 X5 - Has an orbital period of ~ 45,000 years, is presently at a (solar) distance of ~ 6 AUs and OUTBOUND.

Hence any untoward effects (Re: Earth) produced upon either of said bodies by CME(s) or other solar 'interference' (while at perihelion) will not be manifest for at least ~ 340 centuries.

So… To anyone really worried about this - I'll have your brand of vitamins!!! ;-)
