I don't know, those comments below the article were insane,
well, I haven't been reading about any rock or comet that going to hit us, has anyone else heard anything or seen anything?"I've emailed SOHO admin"
"Are they all liars" ,
I think it may be inside the Sun? "keep the truth from the public is pure EVIL!! I looked in the sun´s direction today and was dazzled"
From the article’s sidebar:
Interesting! In Twin Cities tonight, about 6:00 p.m., I saw our comet! To say it is big is putting it mildly. To the west and north a bit, you couldn’t miss it low on the horizonIf by 'Twin Cities' the writer refers to Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN then I must require the services of an ophthalmologist and an audiologist -- Inasmuch as I reside ~ 30 miles from said metropolis and neither saw nor heard tell of anything of the sort... But then maybe I need to get out more... ;-)
Seriously, prior to my participation on these fora (and their ilk) I had *NO* idea the sky was so frightening to so many folks?!?! --- Well… I suppose the demise of the USSR left the doomsayers at a loose end??? ;-)

There's just no gratitude, you know - all the work the SOHO team goes through day after day to make their data available in near-real-time, and they still get accused of participating in a cover-up!
Everything I need to know I learned through Googling.
I had my hopes up when I read about the CME but http://spaceweather.com/ has a low forcast for arora for the next few days![]()
Stick to reading the Sunday Sport in the locker room guys, I don't buy their or your garbage.
wasnt the neat comet last year or something to that effect anyway?
It amazes me that this is still out there!!
NEAT is an acronym for Near Earth Asteroid Tracking --- A service of NASA's JPL...
NEAT have discovered many comets --- Hence any reference to 'Comet NEAT' is ambiguous sans further designative info...
BTW -- Please don't worry about the article - I assure you it’s pure ** start to finish!!! -- And, I might add, a great discourtesy to the SOHO team!
Sincerely
Dan Sarandon
Yeah! And you never read about their heroic efforts in the news, either. They're always living in the shadow of the team that planted the gigantic human face on Mars.Originally Posted by ToSeek

I must also require the services of an optometrist. (Okay, I regularily do; I'm very nearsighted, but correctable to 20/15.) I haven't seen a thing. I did visit an audiologist recently for unrelated concerns, and was told that I have excellent hearing. Hmmm.... Maybe the website is wrong or invented the quote? Naaaaah!
Seriously, the article does appear to have invented things out of whole cloth, so I find the quote a little suspicious even without considering the fact that I'm an amateur stargazer in the Twin Cities who saw nothing of the kind.
I hope this isn't an ignorant question. Why does the path of the comet appear to be a straight line? I know it has to be an ellipse so this must be a perspective issue. But I can't figure out how you can arrange Earth, Sun, and an orbital path so that the path looks like a straight line without having the path go between or behind the Sun.Originally Posted by jami cat
I would only suspect that its because of the large orbital path, and your only seeing a small arc of it.Originally Posted by tofu
Or, it's just easier to make a straight line in photoshop :-?
It's probably not orbiting in the same plane we are. I don't think I am good enough with words to describe the situation, but later, if it hasn't been covered, I can draw some pictures.
1) It appears to be a straight line. A small section of an ellipse will approximate a straight line.Originally Posted by tofu
2) The comet very probably is either in front of or behind the Sun. Notice that the CME had no effect on the comet, therefore, although they appear to be very close, this is a perspective effect of 2D projection of a 3D event.
I am fairly certain the photos they are showing were from a comet that was around this area back in like May or June or last year when one of large solar flares hit, but I am not sure.
I dunno,l either way, looks like crap to me.
and my stepfamily lives between you in Stillwater. Small world, huh?Hey, groovy! We're practically neighbors.
I noticed this guy claimed Feb 2003's weather shutdown was some sort of conspiracy. The late, unlamented Chaiyah banged that drum too.
This was thoroughly debunked by people like nebularain and myself who actually live in the GSFC area. Yes, the weather emergency was real. The Governor ordered non-essential traffic off the roads, subject to a $1000 fine.
Just one example of the kind of flimsy conspirabull promoted on that site.
Woops! Um ... I accidentally misread ToSeek's post as saying:Originally Posted by tracer

I think I'd better swear off the Giggle Juice for the next eon or so....
Re: the 'Comets NEAT' referenced on this thread:
C/2002 V1 - Has an orbital period of ~ 34,000 years, is presently at a (solar) distance of ~ 5.8 AUs and OUTBOUND.
C/2002 X5 - Has an orbital period of ~ 45,000 years, is presently at a (solar) distance of ~ 6 AUs and OUTBOUND.
Hence any untoward effects (Re: Earth) produced upon either of said bodies by CME(s) or other solar 'interference' (while at perihelion) will not be manifest for at least ~ 340 centuries.
So… To anyone really worried about this - I'll have your brand of vitamins!!! ;-)

BTW Calliarcale??? --- I reside in that burgh having the (dubious?) distinction of being "The summer home of the KC Chiefs" --- But alas! Not being a sports fan - said 'distinction' is lost on me – however I daresay it conveys my locale???
Very best regards
