    LHC starts up now..

with proton - proton collisions, and the Swiss tabloid "Blick" has an online headline asking if a Black hole will suck us all in... http://www.blick.ch/news/schweiz/sch...ze-loch-143715

A webcast from CERN here: http://webcast.cern.ch/lhcfirstphysics/

starts up in about an hour...

A black hole must have sucked us in, as I'm watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for the 6th time...

No. Way. Dude. I'm watching the Fantastic Four.

ETA: On a more on-topic note, I find it unbelievable that in the space age there are reputable newspapers printing the theory that the LHC is going to make a black hole non-sarcastically. Still, can't say as how Switzerland is liable to be the only place printing it.

    # Ramping up now! 20 minutes ago via web
    # Beams look really good this time. Preparing for energy ramp! 26 minutes ago via web
    # Beams are in again! Now, cross your fingers! We want to go for collisions here! 37 minutes ago via web
    # Live webcast restarting at 12:00 - Twitter is always on! 42 minutes ago via web
    # Unfortunately beam 2 was no good...we had to dump it...going for new injection about 1 hours ago via web
    # Beams are in! about 1 hours ago via web
    # Preparing for new injection from SPS, the smaller accelerator that brings particles to the LHC. about 1 hours ago via web
    Can't watch the webstream unfortunately.

    What's CMS mean?

EDIT: Got it. Compact Muon Solenoid.

Thanks. So which one are they running? The CMC or the Beauty? Both?

Well, now the only singularity seems to be the singular lack of planet destroying black holes. Kudos to all involved and hearty neener-neener to all the crackpots who thought it would destroy us all.

Does that mean that the equipment is more efficient than anticipated, or is it that there is a new particle that was not expected that is doing the collisions? I mean, is the higher-than-expected incidence of events a scientific discovery?
    As above, so below

This is all wonderfully exciting! Is this thread going to be the spot to come back to for these updates? (other than the LHC twitter feed)

It'd be great to have a central thread for all these updates.

ETA: Also, related to Jens' post - if we're getting more collisions per second would that lead to more lower energy collisions rather than less higher energy ones?
