    Non-solar/planetary systems

    Does anyone out there have a probability on the number of systems there are that dont have "stars" with enough mass to enable fusion? Planets orbiting a gas giant in the dark kind of situation. There must be a few of them out there.... and I'm thinking they would be very hard to spot.

    First of all, those planets would be orbiting brawn dwarf, not gas giant.

    There are also planets orbiting brown dwarfs and free floating planets orbiting the galaxy directly.

    But as you said they are hard too spot so we can only guess.

    Until we find a reliable way to spot them at distances of more than a few light years, educated guess is about the best we can do. As the mass of stars, asteroids and comets decrease; they become more numerous, so brown dwarfs may be more numerous than class m stars. If so, then Jupiter to brown dwarf mass may be still more numerous, in the dark kind of situation.
    On the other hand, none of these have passed though the inner solar system in the past 400 years, so they likely are not 1000 times more numerous than visable stars. Does anyone know how long it takes a Jupiter or brown dwarf mass body to cool to 1000 k after it stops gathering mass? Neil

    When and how could they ever stop gathering mass?

    They will always be collecting dribs and drabs, but what was referred to was the process in a stellar nursery in which a starless core develops cores, but the incoming gas and dust get blown away by larger brighter stars which have turned on and sweep out the formation materials of the smaller stars and BDs.

    There could also be a lot of jovians and brown dwarfs that were ejected from the stellar systems that they formed in.
