    question about graphing programs

    Hi everyone,

I am wondering what folks would recommend in the way of free graphing programs, mainly for 3D modeling (I intend on using it for colorimetric modelling).

    Hi damienpaul,

I would recommend either maxima or octave. Octave is like matlab; however, it has no UI and so has a bit of a learning curve.

Maxima is excellent because it will do symbolic manipulation unlike octave.

Octave supports programming while I don't believe maxima does. Both of them graph quite nicely.

    Hi damienpaul,

There is another Open Source program called Scilab--someone at the forum had alerted me to it... Scilab

It is developed by a French National Lab---but I have yet to experiment very much with it

Octave is a good source as are tools called Maxima, and Sage--

Sage incorporates Octave into its package:

    And Maxima:
