Interesting reading here (http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/articles/nai-research-reveals-major-insight-into-evolution-of-life-on-earth/). Not as "sexy" as panspermia or life coming from comets or Mars, but good solid science at its best.

Yes, interesting article. A major early step that was eventually major enough to alter the chemical composition of the planet's atmosphere, i.e., adding oxygen, which allowed for the development of animals.

Lake... showed that two major classes of relatively simple microbes fused together more than 2.5 billion years ago. Lake’s research reveals a new pathway for the evolution of life on Earth.

Would have been more than 2.5Ga BP if Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanobacteria) is right about there being 2.8 Ga old cyanobacteria fossils.

I think it is more likely that life began right here on the earth. The conditions were right without the need for amino acids from comets or meteors. The Miller-Urey experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller-Urey_experiment) proved that.

I'm curious - why the "rolleyes?"

Looking at the details of the Miller-Urey experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller-Urey_experiment), I find they indicate that life is self-assembling, given enough energy and ingredients.

What a wonderful thing!

Some seek a reason for our existence.

I simply marvel at it!

I'm curious - why the "rolleyes?"...Glad you asked---because I had to go all the way to the link---and beyond---to find out who "they" were! :(

This definitely restores my belief in H2O...:)
