I'm buying a gift for my Dad. He likes Astronomy but has never owned a scope, so he still falls into the amateur category. Plus, I don't have a lot of money :(
I've read through the faq here (http://www.weatherman.com/purchase.htm) but wanted to know your take on this one:

Opinions please? Thanks!

I would say forgo the scope and use the money to buy him a cool set of binoculars. For the money of that scope you can get him a good set.

Yeah, I figured this wasn't very good...
Sigh, people are telling me to get an Orion. Can you recommend one that is $300 or less? And is better than a set of binoculars at that price!
Thanks

This is a question for Charlie but...http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2971922932&category=28 181&rd=1 will get you an excellent amateur beginner's scope for not much money...
