Sunshine with puffy clouds, birds in the trees, 80 ° F with a light breeze . A far cry from the poor southern towns who got
just pasted with the tornadoes these past days. We pray for their recovery and future.

Yeah. Wow. The path was within a half mile of us - for those who saw President Obama in front of a devastated sea of debris, thats a mile from my house along my (normal) commute. Many still missing, infrastructure badly damaged (the local emergency stockpiles were even hit). Big cleanup and rebuilding ahead. Enormous outpouring of volunteers and supplies.

Glad you were spared. Those were terrible , and very wide tornadoes. We'd had one like that which hit Worcester, Massachusetts back in 1953 which was staggering. It wiped out a famous amusment park ( great carousel , roller coaster etc) which never came back. We very seldom see these storms. We do get hurricanes from time to time. These are not good at all.
What you had to live through is beyond belief. With our hopes, may you press on .
Best regards,
Dan

Sunny, as it's been for a while.
This April's ending up with two temperature records for Denmark, highest monthly average ever recorded for April (9.8°C vs. the previous record 9.4°C in 2009) and highest lowest temperature of the month ever recorded (temps never got below -1.6°C vs. the previous record of -1,8°C in 1920).
Updated with the final numbers:
9.8°C average temp for April which is 4,1°C above climate norm and highest recorded.
~250 sun hours (198 sun hours is the norm for April) means it's in top-5 of recorded Aprils, 16-17mm rain total put s it in top-15 for dry Aprils.
And the temps never got below -1.6°C, which is 0.2°C warmer than the previously highest lowest temp for April.

As usual, folks are grasping for a religious explanation. "Rick and Bubba" were on an ABC 33/40 talking about how Government wasn't needed, this was just people coming together--as if it weren't the same thing. However, good GIS mapping material in terms of aerial photography were had only a few days before the Oak Grove event, and done right after, before much clean-up had begun. And the VORTEX team might also disagree, of course.

"The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but someday the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." HP Lovecraft
“Keep looking—keep watching the skies”
The Thing from another World
I’ve never had much use for ‘different ways of knowing’ or of organized religion in general.
I still don’t.
I would really like to say that I came away changed from the recent Horror that blasted through Alabama, not far from the Moundville ruins that HPL was drawn to so many years ago. If anything, my agnosticism has only hardened to atheism.
Yet I have several things of which I am thankful for, having survived this latest assault from the firmament that is now quaintly known as the “Dixie Alley Outbreak of April 2011.”
First of all, I am thankful for both Cooper Green Hospital and the National Weather Service. Both institutions were very busy this past April, and both were targeted for budget cuts (along with many other science programs) by folks I don’t consider human:
http://www.wbhm.org/News/2009/countybudgetcuts.html

http://www.good.is/post/republicans-want-to-cut-tsunami-warning-spending/
http://volcanism.wordpress.com/2009/02/25/something-called-volcano-monitoring/
Secondly, I am also thankful that my family and friends were not targeted by this storm.
A tornado is unlike any other disaster. It is seemingly a living entity that comes howling out of an evil sky to walk the earth. You can smell its spoor as it vomits forth the contents of victims made unrecognizable, proselytizing the landscape with papers, photos, trinkets and other personal effects of those it has eaten.
It throws forth arms, and reabsorbs them, writhing tentacles as it goes, like some forgotten God of the Abysses.

Native peoples have many words for the spawn of Ithaqua (the Wendigo) and Shupnippurkat.
To the Kiowa, he is Man’kayi’a.
In Native Alabama, however the name of the wind-spawn is Mahlikánko.
Blaspheming the heavens with the false manna of insulation, the demiurge heralds its appearance with thunderbolts—baleful sirens its trumps.
Is it any wonder that in no other disaster do parents shush their children, lest something hear them in the darkness, and turn?
Though knowing better, and not wanting to see my personal effects and transportation so evacuated, I fled before it—praise be his comings and goings. This god is real, unlike any other deity being prayed to despite failing to protect, despite failing to cause debris to rise and reassemble into those lives now extinguished.
Perhaps I fled due to reading those other two prophets of non-locality, Heisenberg and Schrodinger, who suggest that to see a thing is to give life to it, and no god can live long without worship. Logical positivism however, demands repeatable evidence-- which was delivered with repeated misery on camera and confirmed beyond any doubt, as evidenced by those stairways left behind the wake of the cyclone—stairways that lead to empty holes in the Cosmos where homes once stood.
**************************
Lastly, I wish to give thanks to those true angels that are broadcast meteorologists:
--James Spann, whose knowledge of the geography that spans the state, was our Michael.
--Jerry Tracy’s longevity and quiet demeanor calmed and balmed his listeners.
--Channel 6’s crew were the last men standing, having tracked the vortex closely after WVUA, Tuscaloosa’s own voice, was silenced.
--Mark Prater, with his prayerful namesake, provided the soul of the tragedy, along with those radio personalities which helped spearhead relief efforts.
Together they voiced a mantra along the invisible ether that is the EM spectrum, which hounded the Great Beast out of our state, denying it any more victims, proving that it was not superstition, but science which saved the day.
And yet, I cannot shake this feeling of having been stalked.
You must understand that the stars were right.
It was, after all, exactly 13 years since Apollyon last stood before the Open Door Baptist Church and knocked. There, a little girl swore that she heard a voice which exclaimed:
“We need more angels over here.”
We still do.

Yeah. They seem at once living, capricious and malevolent. We've only lately been able to catch up with the video that it seems everyone else was watching live when our lights went out. I'm struck that the tornado is much wider than the visible funnel. One writer asked on Twitter how widespread the damage was, so I put together this montage, after finally getting to some of what they're caling the "affected area". Especially where there are trees, structural damage extends much beyond the track obvious on aerial images, and additional wind damage shows up over a larger area in no discernible pattern.

Most areas had their power and telephone restored, but some remained without power through the remainder of the day and in some cases power was not restored until 2+ days later. This preliminary line of storms also caused some NOAA weather radio transmitter sites to stop functioning for the remainder of the outbreak."

No rain yet , but it's pretty cool for May . Got 53° and a breeze . A little sunshine would help.
Maybe................next week . :( At least we didn't get rained out for the golf league.
I feel for the folks along the Mississippi . They have water and snakes to deal with. Nasty situation .

No rain.
We are nearing a record-making drought. :( We're over 90 days without a drop of rain.
NEED RAIN. Which I know other parts of the nation don't want to hear, but our crops and wildlife are suffering. We've also had troubles with wild-fire breakouts in various nearby mountain ranges.
Otherwise sunny, occasional wispy cloud, gusty. Temps averaging low 80s day/mid-50s night.

Record-setting rain here over the weekend. Not too bad today (if it was early April...), 50's/overcast/breezy. Guess I really don't have anything to complain about, lots of folks have it a lot worse that we do here in the Pacific NW weather-wise these days.

We continue to have a very wet spring. In March and April it rained 54 out of 61 days. For the year, through May 15, we've had 20.6" of precipitation, compared to a normal of about 12"; second only to 1950 with 22.45" (since records have been kept). And since the 15th we've had four more days with at least some rain. I'd be happy to mail some to Buttercup if I could.

I'll add that yesterday's "nicer" weather that was forecast in the morning turned out to be gray skies until 5:00pm, then four hours worth of downpours. Today it's supposed to "clear out" but it went from clear blue skies when I woke up to a full, gray cloud cover with dark clouds on the horizon. Yesterday they were saying "At least the weekend will be nice!"
Sunday, we're going to my first Cleveland Indians game since 1995! And as of right now, they're calling for scattered T-storms with a 50% chance of rain. (Granted, that's likely to change many times between now and Sunday, so we'll have to see how it actually works out.)
I know there's a lot of BAUTers in Florida. Anyone want to trade home straight-up?

After three drop-dead-gorgeous days the Great NorthWet has returned to something more normal for this time of year. Mid 50's (F) and partly rainy.
I feel bad even mentioning the weather around here after all the horrible stuff (tornadoes & floods) going on elsewhere. We really have very mild weather. Rarely very hot or cold, little snow, very rare tornadoes, no hurricanes, and (surprisingly to some) we rarely have heavy rains. Or hail, for that matter. Most folks here see sleet and call it hail.

We had real hail here today (central Indiana, not named after the dog). The largest chunks I measured were around 1 inch in diameter.
Trebuchet
2011-May-23, 01:42 AM
I just looked up hail in Wikipedia to see what the low end size limit was. They say 5mm, which sounds about right although a little less than my guess of 1/4 inch. When I was growing up in eastern Montana we had some really severe damaging hailstorms in the summer. Pretty frightening. We had stones of over three inches at times, although the worst one had only 1/2 to 3/4 inch -- accompanied by 100mph winds. There wasn't a west-facing window left in town.

Yesterday we had Dancing Manhole Covers (with video) (http://www.fox8.com/news/wjw-northeast-ohio-weather-storm-damage-5-23-11-txt,0,210596.story).
Sabol admits that it is hard to say for certain what caused the manhole to move like it did. Skeptics might argue that the manhole cover -- probably weighing at least 80-100 pounds -- had to have been manipulated.
What skeptics? We're talking about something in the neighborhood of a mere half pound per square inch.
My big question was what happened at the end when the camera turned around and you just heard "Oh my god" then cut out.
My only guess from the looks of the debris is that big bird got blown away.

My guess is that the wind direction, plus the cars makes a area with a lowered air pressure just above the manhole. Won't take a lot of pressure differential to get it to dance like that. Grass definitely indicates that it's air blowing out from beneath which make it act that way.

And the Sacramento area has been having significant rain, sometimes hard, and anything beyond a light sprinkle is extremely rare this time of year here (even a light sprinkle is uncommon this late in the year). Half decent today for the neighborhood garage sale. A bit of rain for opening, but none during the day and now it's pretty nice. We sold an incredible quantity of my M-I-L's knickknacks.
A learning tale: Years ago, we gave my father-in-law a "Son of Hibachi"; a rather clever little folding barbecue. We had one and used the heck out of it. His, years after his death, was still brand new. We had it out for the sale last year and it attracted no interest. Same thing was happening today. About 2:00 PM I decided to actually try giving a customer a sales pitch. He bought it. It pays to advertise.

I'm not sure about that. The reservoirs are full and there's heavy snow pack. It might help with the fire risk on the fourth, but the increased growth might lead to a greater fire risk later in the season.

Today the temperature was just 40 degree Celsius, it was in the last month just 45 degree celsius, somewhere in the vicinity it was counted as 48 degree celsius. I am living in a very hot region on the earth. sometime the day temperature was cool and night temperature was so hot, because may be the la-nina or el-Nina effect..may be.
But in the rainy season the temperature is almost decreasing and we are now getting a temperature of 26 to 29 degrees.
and in winter normally the temperature goes up to the bottom that is just 10-12 degree Celsius.
Temperature varies with continent to continent and region to region due the diversity in the formations of the surface
conditions. :)

Update to add, since I didn't experience the bad parts:
Worst rain recorded for Copenhagen in 300-400 years, about 150 millimeter (6 inches) (precise measurements won't be confirmed until tomorrow) in only a few hours.
Historical buildings and the fortifications at Kastellet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kastellet,_Copenhagen), one of the best preserved 17th century fortifications in Northern Europe, has been badly damaged.

I recall humidity like that from being born/raised in the Midwest! If my mother didn't toss towels into the dryer, they hung ALL DAY on the line ... and towards sunset might JUST be dry. :(
Here? I can hang the heaviest bath towel fresh from the washing machine, and 15 minutes later she's dry and stiff as a board. :) (Unfortunately this also means breads and cakes must be securely wrapped at all times; otherwise your cupcake is stiff and dry as a brick in 15 minutes too).

Rain and thunderstorms here today.
I saw lightning hit a power pole on the next street over and the whole house shook. It actually gave me goose bump as the whole house made this sizzling noise just before the lightning hit. I am really surprised we have power, if it had hit the next pole over I bet it would have blown the transformer on that pole.
As the lightning hit there was a shower of blue sparks upwards from the pole.

I'm glad to say that sounds familiar! :) Last evening we had a brisk 15-minute rain.
And about an hour later, we had a good old-fashioned gully washer. It rained for 20 minutes straight; a deluge!
Unfortunately we'd decided to take a ride in the rain, and the left-sided windshield wiper's blade would "flip" if the wipers were going too fast. So husband had to keep the pace slow...which wasn't good enough for how fast/hard the rain was coming down! We pulled into a parking lot.

Jeez, we god another rush of storm activity last night too. I was in at work around 8pm when I got a call from my mother - "The storm is coming! Quick, get out of there!" No, it wasn't bunker time, but I had to walk back to her place from work, where I'd parked my car for the day. Unfortunately I was a pinch late and got caught in a spot of hail and the wind turned my umbrella inside out - that's only supposed to happen in slapstick comedies.
Wasn't too severe, though it wouldn't have been too nice for one chap. I was walking along and saw a guy in his gopher (electric wheelchair type thingy) stuck in the middle of an intersection. Seems his battery had failed at the worst possible time. Those things are a little difficult to push - a fair bit of resistance. He was a lovely old chap though. Unfortunately I had to leave him tucked undercover but he reckoned it'd fire up again soon. I hope it did.
Turns out this guy runs out of juice in that thing all the time - he'd done the same thing in the middle of summer directly outside my mum's house. Stuck in the scorching direct sunlight for an hour and a half. Mum helped him out with an umbrella and water, but that can't have been fun. He's a cheerful ol' trooper.
Oh, the rain got a lot heavier later last night too. Lovely!

Houston is sitting on 15 consecutive days with a high of 100F or more, a new record. We've had 24 26 days of 100+, second most; the record is 32 and we have a very good chance of beating it.
And we've had no rain to speak of. Or, rather, if you get any rain you brag about it. (We got 0.1" a few days ago!) We've just been put on mandatory water rationing; we can water our lawns twice a week between 8pm and 10am. That's more than some area communities.

We're still in our streak of 100+ days (18 and counting). The local weathermen are showing seven day forecasts with 100+ temps every day.
Except for one weatherman. He has stubbornly shown five 100+ days but the last two show 99. He's been doing that for about a week now.
Wishful thinking.
Oh, and the drought continues. Houston is drawing water from Lake Conroe to keep Lake Houston's level above the pump suction. And we went on mandatory water rationing this week. Cat jumped down from the windowsill, meowing loudly. A year ago she literally flew over the bed from a nasty crack/flash of storm. Anyway, she curled up beside me and soon it began briskly raining. Seems the thunder and lightning didn't last long, but hopefully we got a lot of rain (I fell back to sleep).
So far our rainy season is just as robust as I'd hoped it would be.

Mmmm...Safford. I spent a great morning collecting aquatic bugs/beetles in the Gila River near there back in 2000. I really need to make another collecting trip to Arizona one of these days. I hear that during the monsoon season, the big longhorn beetles are out and about down that way. Oh, well. Maybe next year.

Saw your hurricane Irene thread; responded to it.
We had lightning to the north last evening, 9:00 p.m. Seemed nothing was going to come of that, then bright white lightning/thunder started up around 12:30 a.m. Don't know if we got any rain from it (fell back to sleep). Currently clear, sunny, refreshingly cool (probably 75 F).
The lightning here is of an intense, eye-hurting white brilliancy. The drapes over the bedroom window are drawn and heavy, and yet I often have to turn my back to the window or cover my eyes with a bit of blanket to keep from being reawakened by the flashes.

Danscope, we've had recent rain; nice amounts. :) Our rainy season has been very good. Saturday night we had lightning and beautiful storm clouds in the Northwest to Northern skies. An area very closeby received a downpour of rain that night.
Currently there's a lull. We're to have mostly clear skies the next 3 days, and then chances of rain again towards the weekend.
Basically I'm blissed that our temps are "cool" for this time of year. Usually Labor Day weekend is hotter than the blazes (as bad or worse than 4th of July). But yesterday's high was maybe only 87 F; and yesterday morning was a bit "nippy."

I remember that well. 103 I think was the high at Sea-Tac, 1st time since records were kept that the temp got above 100. I remember waking up at 3am and it was still 87 inside our house. The next day, I ordered a portable AC unit, and paid an extra 125 bucks to have it overnighted to us (no way was anyone going to find even a fan to purchase within about 75 miles of Seattle...). If the current weather pattern we're seeing in the Pac NW had occurred a couple months earlier, I wonder if temps would have hit triple digits? The sun would be a lot higher in the sky, and we'd have several more hours of heating. High 80's-low 90's in Sept. is extremely rare.

Houston is burning--literally. There is a massive fire in George Bush Park. This park is set in the Barker Reservoir which means several square miles of what used to wooded green space. That space is now brown. The fire is moving most eastward toward the berm. They are hoping the berm will contain the fire but it is possible it could leap the berm and get into the businesses and neighborhoods on the east side of the reservoir. Worst case scenario is if it reaches Buffalo Bayou unchecked. This area has been largely left wild and contains Hershey Park. If the fire spreads down Buffalo, there isn't much to stop it before it get downtown. There is another large park called Memorial that is heavily wooded just inside the 610 Loop that lies along Buffalo.
But, hey, they'll probably stop it before it leaps the berm.

The first rain of October here in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Here on the West Coast, along with the fall rains, will come the rain beetles. From southern California to Washington, these scarab-like beetles live as grubs underground most of their lives. When the first soaking rains occur, the males emerge and take flight. They have enough energy to fly for about 2 hours in search of the flightless, lemon-scented females. The males are often attracted to porchlights or even lighted windows so if you hear something go bump-bump-bump in the early evening or pre-dawn, it could be a rain beetle.

There are just a few records from southern Washington, all in Klickitat County, if I remember correctly. Otherwise, they range throughout Oregon and California and possibly into northern Baja. California has been fairly well investigated by now, but there are still new species being discovered. Just because of the cryptic nature of the group (only emerge during the rainy season and then only just after dark and just before dawn, the females are flightless and sometimes remain underground, etc.), much remains unknown. My current avatar is a picture of the local species, but if you'd like to see more pics, here is a link (http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=pleocoma)to a search on BugGuide. The only webpage devoted to rain beetles is down at the moment.
I caught my first rain beetles of the season this morning even though the rains stopped here about noon yesterday.

Hmmm...I grew up in E wa--though not in Klickitat county. I don't recall seeing critters like that.
Weather here on the wet side of the state: Wet. And windy.

It's 100°F (about 38°C) in Phoenix, Arizona. Or so it says on the news. I doesn't feel like it's that hot.

-7C here this morning. I've had to scrape the frost off the windshield the last three mornings, and yesterday there were snow flurries where I was working. Beats cold rain though..

Been quite nice in southern New England; 60° F , sunshine , a few clouds and a light breeze . No complaints for fall .

Hotter than I would have thought. Still using the A/C.

Well , just in time for nature's early insult. It's 31° F , blowing 20knots with heavy snow ! It's darned inconvenient. Our cat is deprived of his wandering.
And I should say that the roads are getting quite slippery. All this and it isn't yet Halloween. At least I still have power. Expecting 3 to 5 inches snow.

Along with danscope, I've been subjected to an October snow storm (well, we are less than 150 miles apart). I would not call the stuff that's accumulated on the ground "snow": it's slush. About 2 weeks ago we were having weather that was unseasonably warm. We seemed to have completely lost autumn -- almost all the trees still have green leaves, with no color change.

Some light rain here in the North State today. It was enough to stir up the rain beetles at a locality to the north of here, but we probably need a good soaker to get local population up and flying.

We've had a few overnight lows of -11C the last few days. It clouded over last night and now there's a bit of snow.
No matter how well I know that snow is coming, I am still not quite prepared to accept that another winter is upon me.

Frost on the pumpkins this morning. And fresh snow on the nearby mountains.
And of course, since I mentioned pumpkins, they are flying in Delaware (http://www.punkinchunkin.com/) as we speak!

I had an awesome weekend with the boys, warmish with crystal blue skies during the day and freezing cold nights to justify a raging camp fire.

Today , I have 62 degrees with a gentle breeze and clear skies. Tomorrow.... it's off for Epcot and the food and wine tasting festival as well as the master artisans festival. Low 80's there. perhaps a bit of golf...if you like that sort of thing. :)
