Got up to 37 C here yesterday (that would be around 100 in the armpit scale) with a relative humidity of 90%. This would be the definition of hot and muggy...
It was drying out the muck nicely - until the thunderstorms hit... which rinsed the muck out nicely. (The clean up continues.)
Is a lovely 32 C out there right now - though we were only forcast to get to 29.

Bad enough with the muck. 100 ° F and rain added is not fun . Good luck, friend.

Oh, it wasn't 60, it was 80 yesterday. It was 60 during the last 'cold' snap. ;)

We are clear and sunny here in south east Queensland. The forcast is fo highs of 32 C and lows of 22 C everyday for the next week. This is more like the weather I expect here in Paradise.
However, It looks like there might be a little trouble north of paradise - Cyclone Tony (Anthony) is forcast to hit the coast south of Cairns around Sunday...
And Spoons, Cyclone Bianca is heading your way. She is supposed to follow the coast right down to you. (too bad about the Pommes in the cricket - Been a disappointing year for the lads...)

Bah, good luck to Bianca. If she makes it down here it'll cause a little excitement. I can't see it happening, or if it does, hard to see it doing too much damage, but then I love a spot of chaos, so long as nobody I care about is hurt.
With a little luck it'll create a few photo ops, though I expect it'll die out pretty well before it hits us. Shonky wannabe weather crystal baller Ken Ring predicts it'll be a cyclone in Perth... I don't see it having any strength by the time it gets here.

Washington DC and metro area
Calm clear and cold. Today.
But yesterday, now that was epic. Beyond imagining really. Thunderstorms moving in from the ocean, that rained in Maryland, then turned into thundersnows around 3 in the afternoon, so not only was there lightning, the snow came down like a thunderstorm drops water. Snowfall was 3 to four inches in an hour. Wet heavy sticky snow. The rain early in the day washed the salt treatments off the highways, the feds let everyone out early, but not early enough. Traffic and roads became nightmarish, with a 20 minute trip turning into a 6 and a half hour disaster, in sometimes white out conditions. Tree branches snapped under the weight of the heavy sticky snow, taking out power lines and transformers blew, sending glowing sparks up into the storm, while the power went out, back on, out and back on.
Shrubs bent down to the earth, cracking and breaking, as tree branches sagged and the power line to the house was close enough to touch. From the ground, which seemed like a bad thing. As I cleared the snow from the branches I could hear nearby trees snapping and popping as branches just let go, and crashed to the earth. This made it all slightly exciting, that and it being cold and snowing like a sumbich the whole time.
so tired today. Back hurts. So much still to do ..... thanks global warming. Thanks so much

Calling for 10-15 cm of snow today (which we're in the process of getting), but clear skies tomorrow and into next week. Good for me since the Magic: The Gathering prerelease events are this weekend. :) In the mean time schools are shut down, but otherwise not much is happening.

Sunny and warm at 32 C today - driving downtown you would never think two weeks ago the streets were flooded - except how tough it is to find parking (they are still cleaning out the underground parking lots.)
Hey Spoons, it is going to get windy over your way - and there may be a few waves from the storm surge. Cyclone Bianca is supposed to hit Perth on Sunday morning. Check the BOM site. Warnings from Jurien Bay to Albany - With Perth on the wrong side of a cat 1 storm. The surge will go right up the Swan...

I know what it says. I don't buy it for a moment that it's anything more that a heavy breeze. They are trying to make it sound dramatic over here, but there'll be nothing in it by the time it hits the land.
We did have a little bit of wind going on earlier (when I say a little bit of wind, this is one of the windier cities you'll encounter, so it was probably fairly windy really) but I wouldn't expect much splashy stuff going on anywhere north of Mandurah way, and much as they may lie to, I wouldn't regard them as Perth. ;)
Mind you, I'm still using it as an excuse not to go on a booze cruise through the winery area of the Swan Valley, so I can stay home and watch the cricket. Just in case.

Want to know how sunny it's been here for weeks?
Half an hour ago (indoors, in a home office whose 2 windows are covered with standard curtains) I immediately noticed a change in the quality of sunlight: It'd noticeably dimmed.
Clouds?! Must be! :) We need rain.
Well, it is a cloud: Mostly wispy, though with a bit of bulk; just covering the sun, with a bit "extra" around it. But mostly a small and UNsubstantial cloud. And yet I noticed its effect on the sunlight.

The cyclone fell apart before it hit land. I'm sure someone said that'd happen.
It did create some rain and a bit of wind, but now the news is doing their best to continue sensationalise it as the Former Tropical Cyclone Bianca, causing devastation. A few tiles got lifted. Like they always do in heavy winds. No biggie. Worst part, we were forced to play bowls in the rain.
It was 43 degrees C when we started playing, humid as heck, then it rained and got worse. Still, it was good fun. and we won. Plus we were playing in beautiful Glen Forrest, just around the corner from where I grew up in Darlington. I always feel something special when I'm up that way.

A lovely sunny day - with a few fluffy clouds, and temps around 31 C. A perfect day for golfing - too bad I'm stuck in an office all day.
But, Northern Queensland is bracing for the second Cyclone in a week. Cyclone Tony was a catagory 2 when it hit near Townsville. Cyclone Yasi is set to hit in the same area at a catagory 4 (maybe 5) Those people must not live right to get this kind of punishment.
Danscope, i don't think I'll ever be a scratch golfer, but I'm really encouraged by that round on the weekend. Just need a little more advice if you have the time. I'm thinking of investing in a new set of clubs - can't quite afford the custom fitted ones, but would you recomend any over others? Ans my current driver is a 10 degree 375cc - Thinking of a 10.5 degree 460cc - do you think that will get me the extra 20 meters I need to knock another 4 or 5 strokes off?

Yasi is a real monster. The actual storm is a catagory 5 with winds in excess of 300 km/hr. Storm winds are 500 kms across, with a 70 km eye wall. Rain bands extend from PNG to Brisbane (more than 2500 kms. To put that in perspective - that is like a storm that extends from Miami to New York.)

Massive snowstorm wallops much of United States:
Snow in the desert! :) We've gotten 2 inches since last evening (began around 7:30 pm). It's still snowing (4:00 am). Current temp is a cold 7 degrees F. North of here (about 70 miles) was reporting subzero wind chills. The snow is very pretty...and we're fortunate that by mid-day it'll likely mostly be melted. Time and again, a reporter or an interview subject would be identified by the caption

It turns out to be an abbreviation for Lake Shore Drive that I had never before encountered.
It should probably be called The Billy Sunday Storm, as he's the one who could not shut down the town (if you believe the song). Not until now at least.

This morning I walked outside to experience -15F with a wind-chill temperature of -35F -- which ties the coldest still-air temperature I had ever experienced and sets a new record for the coldest wind-chill temerature I have ever experienced.
I did it without gloves or a hat (but with a heavy coat). Within seconds my hands and face were in pain, and within seconds after that I was back inside the shelter o the garage. Even my car, inside an insulated attached garage, was hard to start.
We have very little snow, but the cold is making it impossible to start school busses, so schools are either delayed starting or closed althogether. Natural gas is in such high demand that towns north of Albuquerque are without gas due to critically low pressures. Fortunately my new house has a fireplace, and it is a brick house (better insulated than most).
I am concerned with my vacant house in Albuquerque, because I programmed the thermostat to 50F. I will have to make a trip over there today to check on the pipes and start some water dripping from the faucets.

Speaking of cars getting stuck, I forgot to mention a story I heard the other day. A dar after the blizzard, some people were rescured from a deserted county road after being stuck for 19 hours. They had 2nd degree frostbite because they couldn't safely run the car for heat because they were buried beneath a 17-foot snowdrift. That's a bit unusual for these parts.

Now I feel guilty that I can still squeak out a couple of blossoms on my rose bushes even in January. The main issue being length of daylight. And of course my cyclamen are all running over with blooms due to the cool weather they prefer. All north facing walls and sheltered areas are getting a nice layer of moss.
To me, you people live on Titan or something.
I've never spent a whole winter in snow. I've only visited it. Encluding a couple of genuine adventures in it. ie, one time as a teen some friends and I wandered way too high up a mountain that still had over twenty feet of snow on its south face even in August. With no more equipment than you would bring on a warm dayhike. That was the trip I learned about those damn tree holes. A hazard beyond my experiance before. Someone slid into one head first and I fell in trying to get her out. Though once in the hole with her I was able to push her up out of it and she got help.
I also had that delightful surprise of admiring a great view from a dramatic edge then making the rather distressing discovery I was actually standing on the edge of a cornice when a four foot across section of it, behind me, fell away to show me I was standing on a shelf of snow/ice about two feet thick over nothing but 3 to 4 hundred feet of air. I could even see through the hole that I had wandered off the cliff about twenty feet back.
I may have said bad words. I really, really wanted to freeze in place and taking the next step back to the real edge was very hard. I've only ever been in a couple of stickier spots.
Then there was the river that flowed under the snowfield I walked over. all these light girls are putting there legs through the snow layer and revealing a five foot drop into a three foot deep waterway that stays under the snowfield for several hundred feet before going over a falls and into Gold Lake. And my big butt didn't break through. Maybe I had bigger feet or something.
and to top the day off I developed snow blindness. My vision had turned crimson by four o' clock.
It's a good thing that fate had other plans for me. That whole day was one long round of "asking for it".

Our high today was forecast to be 72 F, with wind moving in mid-afternoon. Winds are now gusting maybe 30 mph. Sky is slightly dusty. Cold/arctic air pushing down and a very warm belt of air coming up from Mexico is causing the wind. :( Our temps will drop again; forecast high tomorrow expected to be 35 F but sunny; perhaps a slight chance of rain.

Chrissy: We had a thaw here a little while ago, so the compact snow on my driveway turned into a sheet of ice. This happens every year, without fail, and I prepare for it by keeping a couple of large buckets of coarse sand in the garage, ready to apply when required. I don't use salt.
BigDon: You were really lucky with that cornice. There is a mountain outside of the town where I grew up that I used to climb several times a year. A large cornice forms on the broad ridge between two of its peaks every winter and usually falls off each spring. One year it persisted into August. Traversing the ridge, we kept at least 50 feet from the edge, and that was plenty of distance for safety. But about 8 years ago, a young couple hiking it in early September got too close and the edge either crumbled beneath them or they slid off and fell a few hundred feet to their deaths. At that time of year the snow that remains is very hard and it is easy to start sliding on it.
I'm not sure how I'd deal with not experiencing a winter with snow each year. It's part of the normal yearly cycle for me. Though I have to admit, I'd prefer a month lopped off each end of it where I'm currently living.
Yesterday I was about 1.5 km from my vehicle into the woods, laying out the centreline of a proposed road, and while readjusting a snowshoe, managed to break one of the straps. I was able to tie it up differently, and continued with my work. The snow is a little under a metre deep there, with a crust about 30 cm down that won't support a person without snowshoes, so walking out without that snowshoe would have been awfully tiring. However, I would have done a field repair using the surveyors tape before trying that. Today I spent an hour repairing it and doing other maintenance on them.
While it got up to about -5C yesterday, last night it fell again to -27C. Today's a town day.

I don't think I would like to be clearing the sticky sand up that would get walked through the house nor would I want to be clearing it up when the thaw comes either. :( I prefer salt, it is clean and easier to disperse.

Was out in sunshine for a couple of hours yesterday (family [in-laws] get-together). Got a sunburn on face and upper chest. :( Didn't expect that on March 1st, not even for this area! Calm, pretty day, temp upwards of 70 F. Probably more of the same today.

Yeah. :) Mine's just enough to give a sensation of heat, and very mild itch. Applied lotion. Thankfully it was mostly on upper chest and NOT the face.

It's a big warm (sometimes HOT) blazing yellow ball of light which "rises" in the east in the mornings and "sets" in the west much later.
It's currently very warmly shining on my house, with dappling of rays through my front mesh door. ;)

Most of February and the first two weeks of March were cold, even going down to -35C one night. But the last week has been great, and the ice pack has finally melted off my street. But I still have a ~five foot snow bank next to the driveway.
Yesterday I made the mistake of agreeing to go in the woods with another fellow to do some layout. A thin crust had formed on the snow overnight, not strong enough to support a person, but thick enough to catch the toe of the snowshoes and make walking difficult. By noon all semblance of a crust was gone and I was sinking to my knees. We gave up at 1:00 and headed back to the vehicle. You'd think that doing this sort of work 2-3 days a week for the last two months would prepare a person, but no, my legs felt like they were on fire after that. But I love the prospect of the snowpack settling, and that period in late March, often extending through April, when a person can scoot around the forest on a thick crust in the morning, and even the afternoon snow is not that bad because it has had time to really settle in. I guess you have to do this to appreciate it.

About 10 C today. Tuesday it was really nice day out I decide to go for a little walk. I took a long a garbage bag to do some cleaning at my destination and end up picking bottles and cans, a while garbage bag full in just over 3 km.
Eta when I got there the snow was still on the path in the woods. Walked up the snow was soft in some areas so my feet wnet straight through. When coming down the path I ended up with my kiester in the snow. I already get one foot wet from trying to get one can that was in the ditch, the water melted underneath so it was not such a firm spot to put my foot.

We keep having rain around here (not unusual this time of year for Northern California, but we've had a few dry years), and then there was some extremely nasty wind over the weekend, which damaged the fence in two locations. Fun. Yesterday, some distance from here, but close enough for local news, there was a tornado. Yesterday was the first day in months that the temperature here rose above 10C. The snow in my back yard finally disappeared yesterday, and the small pile next to the driveway in the front may be gone by the end of the day or tomorrow.
My field work has benefitted from overnight temperatures of -6C or so. The snow in the woods was like concrete in the mornings last week and I could scoot around on it without snowshoes for the first few hours of the day. Fantastic conditions, and one of the most enjoyable times of year to be doing reconaissance and layout work in the woods. It'll all fall apart this coming week as it's forecast to be above freezing some nights.

It made 68°F today, with some sunshine. A light rain now. Let it rain. Tuesday it will be 70°F and perfect for the golf league.
Excellent. :)

No rain.
No rain.
No rain.
Now a wild fire in the mountains east of here. :(
Sunny. Sunny. No rain. No rain since December, only 1 snowfall in early February.
Can we say "monotony"?
