Clouds teased us again yesterday afternoon/evening. :-( Began to certainly look as though a real storm was brewing and we'd get rain. But nope. The clouds fizzled and floated off to the west. Not even one peal of thunder. <_<
Currently spotty (sparse) white clouds. Warm, bright morning. There was red in the sky around dawn; hopefully that means rain today. Calm, temp probably 86 F.

Lots of clouds again.
Floating around, teasing us. <_<
No doubt gloating, "The humans are watching again, wondering what we'll do!"
And likely will simply move on westward come 7:00 p.m. with no rain, nothing. Like last night and the night before.
Yeah, I think clouds can be cruel and enjoy playing mind games with humans. :-(

Western Washingtonians: People who go to a family reunion, complain about all the rain we've had, and then spend the afternoon moving their lawn chairs around to stay in the shade! No such problem this morning, gray and a fine drizzle.

Crazy day here yesterday. It's been a miserably hot summer in the DC area overall, but yesterday it was cloudy and drizzly all day, and the high might have reached 72. I wore long pants and brought a jacket to go watch a soccer match - at the same stadium where a couple of weeks ago the high was 105.

Woot! just got a storm and .75" of rain.
Incidentally, there was a downburst last night directly over ORD that generated 70mph gusts (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=lot&storyid=85794&source=0). Good thing they saw it and warned the airport. It knocked out power and may have collapsed an aircraft hangar wall (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/14010257-418/early-morning-storms-bring-downburst-power-outages.html).

Unusually warm and wet. We're into our third round of very heavy rains, complete with warnings of flash floodings.
I've already received two reverse-911 calls warning me of flash flooding in my area, and a quick peek at the creek out back, which is normally dry, reveals it's overstepped its banks.
That's quite a ways down, though, about thirty feet. The flow rate would have to be more than twenty times its current amount for me to experience flooding.

Wow. He'd better never move to my area. We're often 105 F this time of year.
My sister still lives in upper Midwest (near our hometown). She -- a native to cold weather and still living there -- once said, "I don't understand people (here). It's all what you're used to...I grew up in E Wa, where temps in the 90's are not at all unusual, and people deal with them fine. Over on the W. side of the state, 90 is rare. We were never in an official evacuation zone, either. That almost made it worse -- it felt like we were trapped. I couldn't get to Chico to work and didn't want to go anyway for fear I wouldn't be let back in and the family would have to evacuate without me. I do think that local government didn't take it that seriously...there are 13,000+ people in this area, who rely on one exit.

40 miles from Chico to the peaks on the other side of the valley. That sounds about right. It always seems farther because of the time it takes to drive over there. It is currently 49°F/9°C, with winds out of the South at 17 mph (27 kph)...which is quite a change from two days ago. A storm system began moving through south central Alaska on Tuesday, bringing high winds with it, gusting up to hurricane force. The strongest winds in the Anchorage area, as usual, were along Turnagain Arm (Cook Inlet) and the "Upper Hillside" area, on the foothills of the Chugach Mountains on the southeast side of town. Many areas reported wind speeds of 70–90 mph (112–145 kph) with one unoffical report of 131 mph (211 kph) at Glen Alps.
Our house is also at the foot of the Chugach range but fortunately, we're well north of the Hillside areas and our lot is fairly sheltered from the higher winds. We could hear it roaring above our house...it sounded somewhat like a train coming over the mountain...but we didn't get the tree-snapping winds that many others did. I'm glad to say that there was no damage to the house, property, or my new, work-in-progress shed roof. The old shed roof had sustained damage during last winter's record snowfall...it looked more or less like a potato chip...and had just gotten around to replacing it on Sunday. I had gotten as far as rafters and sheathing before it started to rain. The tarp even stayed in place.
Still, we lost power at about 10:30 PM Tuesday night, as did about 50,000 other homes and businesses in Anchorage, Eagle River, Chugiak (including Peters Creek), and the Matanuska-Susitna Valley borough, as far north as Talkeetna. We spent last night in a hotel in town but as far as I can tell, we're still without power. We're hoping that it will be restored today.

Well, we made it to 48 straight days w/o measurable precip. 51 days is still the record after a bit of rain last night. We're getting back to a warm, dry pattern; if we didn't have a rain shower last night, the current dry spell could well have lasted into 60+ days. There's been an accumulaton of the dandruff like white stuff on the ground, from now on I'll be refering to it as "snow". It's also become much colder, if this trend continues the whole globe will soon be frozen over...

We drove across a damage path that led from the top of a hill across a gulley that was bridged over, so tornadoes don't weaken over terrain much if at all.
The one early this year in Center Point--I heard that one around 4AM

-15 C cold but sunny. I prefer it much more when it's around this temperature with little wind and the sun is out. I seem to feel the cold more when it's a bit below zero, but the humidity is higher.

Still with very fickle weather. First it's gusty (up to 20 mph), then still. Clouds, then clearing off. Later clouds return. Currently calm (for how long?). Temp probably 72 F. Sky currently very clear ... but that could change yet again (3 hours ago sky filled with huge bars of gray-white clouds).
Hopefully we WILL get rain somehow. :(

We almost hit 70 today, after a run of cold weather. It's bitter sweet. One of the local news people on TV passed away suddenly this week, two days after being diagnosed with leukemia. She always loved the warm weather and hated the cold. Today was the memorial service. It's like it was in honor of her. She was a Facebook friend of mine. She'll never like any of my comments ever again.

No kidding! Heavy rain, high winds, some trees down and some power outages reported. The coast is really getting it, some locations are reporting wind gusts in excess of 80 - 100 mph.
And we have several more frontal systems coming through over the next few days. Should be interesting...

Yup, it's awful. Payback, I guess, for our extended summer. The RR tracks north out of Seattle are blocked in several places by mudslides. These run along the shore of Puget Sound below the bluffs and are part of the BNSF main line, which passes over Stevens Pass east of Everett.
My niece is planning on heading across the pass tomorrow to go visit her parents and siblings in Boise for Thanksgiving. It makes me very nervous, I wish she'd come have dinner with us instead.

After a record-setting rainfall yesterday, more on the way...However, if your niece sticks to I-90 over the mtns. she should be OK as long as she's comfortable driving in inclement weather. I don't think the freezing level is supposed to get much below 4000 ft, and will rise this weekend. I know I-90 was bare and wet last night over Snoqualmie Pass. Not sure what the outlook is further east though, I-84 can be problematic east of Pendleton. Edit: Check this, looks like I-84 is fine between Pendleton and the Idaho border: http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/RCMap.asp?mainNav=RoadConditions&curRegion=3#incidents

Tomorrow is supposed to be very wet, too. Butte and Big Chico Creeks are way up, but still lower than I've seen in the past. The weekend may change that. I have friends living very close to the Sacramento River that I've been concerned about, but so far, so good.
The rain beetles here on the Ridge seem to be done for the season. Other species are still flying elsewhere and it's been a fun couple of weeks. I'm up to five species for the season. I might get number six tomorrow or Sunday.

Yeah! One thing a lot of folks don't understand about the Northwest is that while it rains frequently, and for much of the year, heavy rain is actually pretty uncommon. It mostly just drizzles, which is why I refer to it as The Land of Intermittent Wipers. Our annual rainfall is actually less than most of the Midwest.
It's eased up this morning and the cabinet is now dry.

Wha? This map (http://morganmaps.com/tag/u-s-rainfall-map), if it's accurate, shows that the coastal portions of the PNW gets more rain than even the actual Midwest (ignoring the plains annex). If you're using the desert east of the Cascades as your baseline, then yeah, I'd agree.
I dunno why you doubt 5" in 24 hours, R.A.F. A place I once lived in the Midwest got 17" overnight.

My bad. I should have been specific that I was speaking of the heavily populated Puget Sound region, not the costal area (which includes actual rain forests) nor the part on the other side of the Cascades, which is essentially desert. Note that on the map the space between the Olympics and Cascades is in the green zone, similar to the Midwest. It does appear that we're in the darker green. A little later perhaps I'll see if I can look up actual rainfall averages for some cities in both regions.

Annual precipitation from this site (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0762183.html):
Cleveland: 38.71
Des Moines: 34.72
Detroit: 32.89
Twin Cities: 29.41
Olympia, WA: 50.79 (Sorry, Gillian!)
Portland, OR: 37.07 (Portland ME is much wetter)
Seattle-Tacoma: 37.07
So we're pretty similar to much of the Midwest. More of our precipitation is rain rather than snow, of course. I was surprised by how much more rain Olympia, between Portland and Seattle, gets compared with the other two.

Ah, it's closer than I thought.
Our average here is just under 33" per year, but we're currently about 12" short and even if we get average precipitation for the rest of the year, we'll end up with the driest year on record.

I just looked up Everett, WA, where I live and it's about the same as Seattle, despite being pretty much the epicenter of the Puget Sound Convergence Zone. I also looked up Vancouver, BC, and was surprised to see they get 62.543"! Victoria, on other hand, gets only 22.96.

No power outages here, not even a flickering light. That's a vast improvement from past storms. There are lots of small limbs down here, though.
The Sacramento River is just about at flood stage near my friend's home. Earlier, a large sycamore tree came floating down the (usually) small stream in front of his house.

There must have been outages after our outage that became more important...my reasoning on this, follows...
I called the PG and E outage line about 1PM, and was told that workers were on site, and that it would be fixed by @ 5:30PM.
I called back at 6PM and was told essentially the same thing, except the time had changed from 5:30, to 11PM.
That's when I decided it best to go to sleep....and was then awoken at 9:30 when everything came back on.

Lots of heavy rain! As treb says, most of our rain is of the days on end with light showers/constant drizzle variety. The heavy stuff is not as common. Lots of it over the weekend though! Luckily we had enough of a dry period where I was able to get on my roof and scoop out all the crud in my rain gutters that was causing them to overflow. Scraped a bunch of moss off the roof as well (yes, moss on rooftops is a problem in this area).
This time of year we get lots of HUGE puddles because of the rain/wind combined with all the leaves clogging up storm drains. Actually they're floodles -- too big to be a puddle, too small to be an actual flood.
