Cool, perhaps 60 F. Windy. Gusts probably up to 30 mph. If it gets windier (unlikely, considering we're a little over 1 hour to sunset), we'll have an actual dust storm. Partly cloudly all day: Soft, limp-looking white and gray clouds, now tattered; if not for the wind, they would have had some substance. But the wind's been kicking the life out of them.

Man, it was nasty yesterday. Cold. Breezy. Raining. November.

I was awakened about 3:00 this morning by the rain. I don't recall ever hearing it rain so hard on the roof here. Yes, this area has a reputation for rain, but in reality it usually just drizzles -- intermittent windshield wipers are a must. It seldom rains hard.

Actual chance of snow here tomorrow and Saturday! Actually, the forecasts I've seen are for a slight chance of wet snow in the higher elevations around here--above 500ft. Which of course has everyone freaking out and acting like a blizzard is coming...it's amazing the 'snow phobia' that folks have around here...just mentioning the word 'snow' gets everyone scrambling for hamburger, batteries, and toilet paper because they think we're gonna be snowed in for weeks. The few occasions we actually get snow, most of the time it's wet snow and gone within hours. We'll get a major snow event once every two years or so. Now, up in the mountains an hour to the east (or west for that matter)is a different story...

Right now it's in the low 40's and breezy with some showers...typical for this area in November.

The Great Northwet smiled on her today. It was cold, but absolutely gorgeous -- clear and sunny. There was actually a trace of snow on my truck when I got up and when I made the morning latte run my wife's car (which lives in the garage) said it was 29F. Yeah, it went above freezing here today, and I was over-dressed for the work I was doing. I like it too when it's steady at around -10C. I usually get lots done when it's like that.

However, it seems I can't win because of the wind these days. The forecast is for 40 gusting to 80 km/h. One of the areas I'm working has a high risk of windfalls under those conditions and I refuse to go there when it's above 20 km/h (three guys I know had a tree come down within 15 m of them a month ago), and in the other area, though safe under those conditions, I need to get some tree heights and it's kind of difficult when they're swaying....

It's hard to know how to prepare when the temperatures yo-yo this much. Last year because of La Nina the path of the jet stream along the Arctic boundary oscillated a lot and we were going from deep cold(-40) to above zero in a few days then back.

Living in the BC Cariboo the last decade we had some impressive windstorms that caused a lot of damage, microbursts knocked down trees and power poles all around the area several times.

And here it comes: Getting progressively windier since mid-day (current time is 5:16 p.m. CST). Gusts of up to 30 mph. Gusts up to 45 mph here (similar yersterday), but sunny. A lot of trees dumped their leaves yesterday. I drove by a guy with a blower making a pile of leaves taller than he was. It was a contest between the wind and his blower. He was winning, but it looked like he was doing a fair amount of repeat work. In Denmark the day we consider most relevant for Christmas is today, the 24th, since it's Christmas eve1 rather than Christmas day we celebrate.

Here we're going to get the largest difference between average temperatures for consecutive Decembers ever recorded, at least 7.5°C (13.5°F), possibly as much as 8°C (14.4°F), up from last year's December average of -3.9°C (25°F).
This puts it at number 7 or 8 on the top ten of differences between same month in consecutive years.

Previous record for difference between consecutive Decembers was 6.6°C (11.9°F) between 1981 (-4.0°C/24.8°F) and 1982 (2.6°C/36.7°F).

I can just imagine the mess a journalist would have made of the unit conversions. :D

After a cool and historically dry December, more typical weather is here: a front came through here last night with pretty high winds and lots of rain, and temps in the 50's-not unusual for some frontal systems we get because sometimes they originate in the tropics.

Another front is coming through tonight. And another one on Friday...you get the picture. Raining heavy right now with temps in the 50s.

Sounds like the Midwest (where I was born/raised). I recall driving home (32 miles) from college. The fog continued thickening, and by the time I got home the orange lights from car's hazard flashers were reflecting off the fog! Visibility at that point was probably 12 inches. :( Fortunately we lived in a very rural area. I cracked the windows in order to hear whatever vehicle might be approaching; fortunately none. Generally is very foggy where I grew up in spring especially, and often early winter. Ugh! Fog is terrible.

So true, 'snowphobia' around here is pretty bad. My guess is that stores will be out of batteries, hamburger, and toilet paper by tomorrow while people prepare for the 1/2 in. of wet snow that some areas might get; and will last about 1 hour. It is difficult with the hills we have, and the wet sloppy snow we usually get is tougher to get around in than drier snow. Still, people tend to have a disproportionate reaction to even mentioning the 's word'...

I did see the trucks spraying whatever it is they put on the roads to prevent them from freezing last night.

Snow is forecast over the weekend more or less..not a major dumping but rather showers with local accumlations of an inch or so depending on where you live in the area. Daytime highs are forecasted for high 30's into the 40's so I doubt roads will be too treacherous. Doesn't keep people from panicing though.

Areas N. of Seattle usually get hit a little harder because of local weather patterns.

Here's a little more on the subject...yes, whole news articles are devoted to the fact that it might snow, and snow showers are in the forecast. THere is a local weather blog that does a good job of explaining local weather.

Just wait till it actually does snow, the news channels will have 24hr coverage...sheesh!

It's currently cloudy and 7°F at the house. As of Wednesday, the official snowfall for Anchorage this winter stood at 81.3 inches...as opposed to the 41 inches that is typical at this point. Due to unseasonably warm temperatures (up to about 40°F) over a couple days, we had water intrusion at the house on Wednesday. So I had to leave work early to don an aggressive pair of ice cleats and climb on the roof to break a couple of ice dams but not before shoveling my way through more than 2 feet of accumlation to get to them. When I came down, I then had to shovel the snow I had pushed off of the roof. Being slightly wet, the fall from height compacted it nicely...not quite like cement but still firm enough that I alternately chopped and shoveled. I didn't finish until 9PM.

At least I'm not in Cordova or Valdez. They've had 18 and (I think) 27 feet so far this year.

We're in full Snowmaggeon 2012 here, which similar to Treb means showers with snow sticking to yards, but mid 30s means roads are just wet. Of course this means every news crew in the area is out telling us where they saw snow and generally acting like this has never happened before, and if we're not in full panic mode yet, we should be.

Well, although I said I was staying in, I've been out. It was an emergency: My wife needed her afternoon latte! I picked up tomorrow morning's while I was at it and stowed it in the fridge. Driving is not bad at all although I always get nervous about kids sledding and driving little 4-wheelers in the road. I grew up in Montana -- we never sledded in the road!

I experimented, where it was safe, with the ABS in my wife's Honda Pilot. Seems to work pretty well, allowing decent directional control. I was going to try turning it off for a comparison but it turns out you can't. I was thinking that there was some condition (very deep snow?) where you're better off without ABS but apparently Mr. Honda disagrees.

After snow showers off and on most of the day yesterday, we finally ended up with a couple inches in my town. Our little side road is icy, but main roads and freeways are mostly bare. Other areas N. of us got more snow. Not a lot of folks out -- paranoia sets in when there's even a little snow, though some hilly areas are tough to get around in with even a little ice/snow. Then there's the various classes of folks that do go driving:

1) Those who know what they're doing; know how to drive in snow and do fine
2) Those who don't, but they know this and stay home (smart)
3) Those who don't, but they have AWD/4WD and assume they can drive like normal (dumb - they usually end up in ditches)
4) Those who don't, so they put chains on and drive 15mph on a dry, ice free road...

We're supposed to get more snow showers through Wednesday, should be an interesting few days...

Edit: Conditions seem to be developing that takes our currently light, slightly annoying snow up to major weather event type snow. From http://cliffmass.blogspot.com/2012/01/major-snow-event.html

"The bottom line is that there is a serious threat on Wednesday of 8-15 inches of snow over the region, with a minimal turn over to rain. The biggest snowstorm in years. Anyway, before anyone goes out and buys a snowblower, lets see what tonight's runs show. If they continue this trend then Slushmageddon might be replaced by Snowmageddon. In almost any conceivable case, Wednesday morning is going to be very problematic for travel...I suspect there will be a lot of school cancellations and the like.

The main roads around Seattle are in very good shape now, but the Wednesday event could dwarf the weekend snow."

This could get interesting...I miss my Subaru...

We've got about 4 inches of dry, fluffy snow (snow around here is usually wet and heavy) and still falling lightly. It's supposed to taper off this afternoon. Freeways look not too bad, but still lots of spinouts. Many main roads plowed as well, but side streets are not. This is a great day to stay home if you don't absolutely have to be out there. Snow events like this are pretty rare (once every 2 - 3 years or so) so we're just not set up to deal with them very well, and hills don't make it any easier. Temps not expected to get above freezing till tomorrow, with real melting not till the weekend (fairly rare for snow to be around more than a couple days).

Gillian's got it worse though, Olympia got 12 inches+! That's near record territory and a significant weather event. Some areas south of Olympia reporting 18 - 20 inches!

Best thing to do is get some hot chocolate and enjoy watching it come down. Walks in new fallen snow are nice too.

If (when) I lose power, I'll be declaring a personal one (but not here because I won't be able to post). When I was younger, I got a sick pleasure out of situations like this. I don't anymore.

Yes, this is officially a BIG DEAL! I've got 1/2 inch of ice covering everything. My car is literally frozen to the driveway, which is an ice rink. 200,000 + without power, trees down all over, road closures, the Governor has declared a statewide state of emergency, and it's still raining and below freezing. So the power outages and falling trees are likely to continue. I can see the tree branches and power lines outside my house sagging quite a bit.

I've only seen 1 other ice storm like this in 20+ years of living in Seattle and the surrounding area, back in 1996 I believe. And I think this one is worse if only because it seems like it's lasting longer than the ice storm of 1996.

It's supposed to warm up a bit to the mid 30's later this afternoon, and the warm moist air from the south will finally push the cold dry air back up into Canada where it belongs. The real warming starts tomorrow, with rain and temps in the 40's. From Snowmageddon to Icemagedden, now get ready for Slushmageddon...

Still snowing in Everett; I feel fortunate that the ice has stayed south of here. 11" on my truck now, 9" on the level in my driveway. No garbage service, no mail delivery, but I went out a few minutes ago to get my wife her iced lattes! I stocked up so now I don't have to go out again until Saturday.

This "snow event" is becoming somewhat unusual for its duration -- it started Saturday and I expect we'll still have considerable snow on the coming Saturday. I've been seeing reports of a mild winter in much of the country, associated with La Niña. Unfortunately, the opposite works for us. El Niño years are mild, La Niña years are bad.

Funny to read this while I'm in the process of slowly changing from my previous stance of "you'll have to catch me dead before I'll live in the US" to "well maybe, if it was in the Seattle area".
Doesn't stop the process though, not that it's ever likely to be relevant.

NB I do know I thoroughly mangled the idiom there, just go with the literal meaning.

Not quite current but really cool, the weather of Europe December 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CooYZxXMPHI) as seen from EUMETSAT's Meteosat-9.

Yes, very cool.

My Washington neighbours: What a mess. Sounds like a state of emergency. It's been thawing here on the island again, and stong warm winds forecast for tomorrow. Back home is still a deep freeze with -38 again this morning.

Five years ago we had a sequence of snow, partial thaw, freeze and snow again. The new snow wouldn't slide off the trees and it totally overloaded the crowns. Trees and power lines were down all over the place. Some of the rural properties didn't get their power back for three weeks.

Temps finally got above freezing very early this morning. Thaw commencing. Gonna be a rough couple of days, still 100,000's without power. I was able to get into work today. Most main roads are bare and wet, though side streets are very slushy and icy. Once I was able to get through the slush berm the snowplow put up while plowing the main road, it was a pretty smooth drive.

Flood warnings out now...with all the melting going on, storm drains are getting clogged with slush and major rain/wind on the way. Temps in the mid 30's right now, supposed to get into the 40's later today as a front moves through.

Ah yes, the chinook! I remember those warm winds when growing up in Richland (Usher I see you're in Kennewick). They thaw things out pretty quickly. IIRC, a true "chinook" is a warm east wind blowing off the Rockies, not sure how that term got attached to warm winds in E. Wa. I think that term could possibly be used for any warm, sinking wind. Of course, a chinook is a also a pretty tasty salmon, or a helicopter (I personally cannot comment on the taste of a CH47 chinook....)

I always feel guilty posting my weather situation here during the winter. While not nearly as warm as L.A. during the winter we are a solid Mediterranian climate with a wet and a dry season. I put down about ten pounds of grass seed this weekend to take advantage of the rain storms blowing through. Kentucky bluegrass.

(That's why I was crying about the lack of rain. It stops raining in May altogether and stays dry until November, with the occasional Eastern Pacific hurricaine remnant pushing a day of showers through in the middle of summer. And that is by no means a yearly occurance.)

So we have moi putting down lawn, Dan waiting for the first CO2 frost of the year and poor Henrik...

He's eagerly awaiting the Danish holiday "Atmosphere Collapse Day" a no school, no work national holiday*.

Makes it hard to complain about a 45F/25mph wind night to a sympathic audience.

Our current weather's around the freezing point of H2O, not N2. :D
We're having an unusually mild winter, with December getting the second-highest lowest temperature of the month ever recorded (records start in 1891), the temperature never got below -5.1°C (22.8°F).
It's also unusually late in developing, the first time this winter a weather station measured a full day without getting above freezing was last Tuesday (the 24th of January) and so far the lowest temperature measured for this winter is -10.0°C (14.0°F).

While in Macedonia on an international conference last week I shocked a couple of Indian guys huddled up outside "enjoying" their smokes by standing outside with them wearing a shirt with rolled up sleeves and enjoying the Sun in the balmy 2-3°C (about 37°F). I was actually there to enjoy the Sun as I don't smoke.

BTW, your relaxation trick from another thread really works for that situation: very little wind, just above freezing temps plus the Sun for heating.

BTW, our word for "atmosphere" is "atmosfære".

this could be related to a very warm and dry winter we've had in Florida.

Weather continues to be "conflicted." One day is sunny and warm...next is cloudy and cool.

Today is mostly overcast, varying shades of gray, probably 53 F. Calm. Possible rain in the forecast.

Grey overcast , 38°F with a very light rain. Open water on lakes and ponds and no snow. The ground hog was right :)

Today, around noon, became windy (gusts to 30 mph) which made the 61 F high feel cooler. Partly cloudy; of the limp, tattered type (ugh). It's currently 8:24 p.m.; winds have died down. Cool, probably 48 F.

It was violently windy here in Central Florida, wonderfully so, but the humidity was such that I was dripping.

Tonight is nicely cool, though.

(I'm a transplant from the actual United States, 'way up north.) ;)

warm days and cool nights mean icy conditions here which also mean slip and fall season. I fall down hard twice in 4 days, the last time was yesterday and I am still in some pain.

Wow, is it often that windy in Florida sans a hurricane or thunderstorm? I don't miss humidity at all. The Midwest (born/raised) was mostly very humid (ugh).

Today is gorgeous. Started out nippy with light frost on car. Now it's sunny, warm (probably 67 F), a light breeze. :)

Snowing prety steady this morning but not cold enough to accumulate much. Reminded me of that old classic "I'm Dreaming of a White President's Day."

SE England officially in drought, least rainfall this year for (I think they said) at least 100 years, earliest hose pipe ban (soon) on record etc.
