One of the things we Americans are good at is adopting other peoples "significant days" as an excuse to party.
For instance:
St. Patricks Day is a much bigger event here than in Ireland.
Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is the date of a (very) minor victory over the French in Mexico, but here in Texas, it borders on a state holiday.
Tomorrow night, over 100,000 people will jam into 5 blocks of 6th Street in Austin, Tx. wearing weird costumes and consuming vast quantities of alcohol.
