View Full Version : GMT or UTC?

A couple of months ago my mobile switched to UTC for time reference. When I looked it into it a bit more I was surprised to find that UTC has been in use since 1972, with civil airlines and the military referring to it as 'zulu time'.
BAUT I see, still uses GMT, and wondered if they will change to UTC at some point.
And does it really matter what it's called? Is there a specific reason for the sudden change or is it just political correctness again!

I think Greenwich is somewhat of a Mecca to astronomers, so it makes sense to me.

I think its just a matter of history. GMT is a time zone, UTC is the acceptance of GMT as the standard.

I wouldn't want to be the person who goes in and says... "Okay people, it's UTC from now on! Please adjust your time zone."
They'd need a tank and the riot squad for back up!
Plus some delicate surgery to remove the three telescopes and one antique sextant! Ouch!

More funner question: UTC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinated_Universal_Time) or UT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time)?
Or, UT0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), UT1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), UT1R (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), UT2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), UT2R (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), UTC-SLS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions), or UTS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Time#Versions)?

Does anybody really know what time it is?
Does anybody really care?;)

I prefer GMT, personally, because there's such delightful history behind it. UTC and its permutations seem so cold to me.
